Today is the 25th anniversary of the date that the "smiley" or "emoticon" was first used. In that time there has been quite a bit of evolution from the original string of characters : - ) to the animated symbols that we all love and use so frequently.

Below is a link to a National Public Radio story on the inventor and tracking down and retrieving the original message in which the first smilies were used.
