Hey, whats up.
Im a high school senior and I had to read 1984, and since you had some intuition towards the book I thought you could help me with some questions we have to answer. Thanks ( ahead of time ).

1.Character: In what ways are Julia and winston alike? In what ways are they different?

2.Theme: Why does the party permit couples to marry but discourages love?

3.Plot: What are Winston and Julia willing to do for the Brotherhood? What is the one thing they are unwilling to do?

4. What types of things does O'Brien tell them they might have to face as members of the brotherhood?

5. What are the 3 superpowers always at war according to the brotherhoods handbook?

6.How are Winston and Julia betrayed?

7. Irony: Julia tells Winston that even though the party can torture a person and make him say anything, they cannot make him belive it.
-How do you feel about this statement?

8. How easy is it to brainwash a person?

9. Do you think that governments actually use brainwashing?

Whats up again people.
I've got another assignment that yall can help me with.
Thanks again.

1. Write a diary from one of the other characters point of view.( Not Winston)
- Choose at least 3 different situations.

2. Create a "constitution" for the brotherhood. Include rules, contraints, rights, ect. or create a "Bill of Rights" - same inclusions.

3. Write a poem or short story with the same tone as 1984.

4. Examine the symbolic significance of the clock, the paperweight, the song the prole woman sings, and the nursery rhyme about the bells.

Once Again...............Thanks

Hmmm.

They're all very easy questions, which even a cursory read of the book will tell you. Accordingly, I suspect that you haven't read it! ;)

Anyway, since they're so basic, I'll give you a few one-liners.

Read the book anyway - it's a great read; relentless, but ultimately satsifying, if only for a look at the what the world isn't.

1.Character: In what ways are Julia and winston alike? In what ways are they different?

Both rebellious, but for different reasons. J likes to rebel to express her sexuality, W, because he sees the evil.

2.Theme: Why does the party permit couples to marry but discourages love?

Love/lust/strong emotion = dangerous to Party. Children, obviously essential to continue, ergo marriage - kids, not love or sex[ual pleasure]

3.Plot: What are Winston and Julia willing to do for the Brotherhood? What is the one thing they are unwilling to do?

Anything but betray each other.

4. What types of things does O'Brien tell them they might have to face as members of the brotherhood?

The usual, torture, murder, horrors etc...

5. What are the 3 superpowers always at war according to the brotherhoods handbook?

That one's so easy I'm going to make you read at least some of the book to find out ;)

6.How are Winston and Julia betrayed?

Question doesn't compute - they weren't betrayed, they were under the Thought Police's eye from the start.

7. Irony: Julia tells Winston that even though the party can torture a person and make him say anything, they cannot make him belive it.
-How do you feel about this statement?

Nice, self-contained question, you can definitely answer that yourself. It's a simple statement, write how you feel about it.

8. How easy is it to brainwash a person?

Piece of cake, ask a church.

9. Do you think that governments actually use brainwashing?

Always have, always will. "Brainwashing" in terms of 1984 is simply propaganda of an order of magnitude. Every government so far uses and has used propaganda. Most of it is fairly mild, to be fair to the world's governments, but remember, Pol Pot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pol_Pot)is only a quite recent political figure who managed to brainwash an entire population.

You could maybe specify what help you're actually after, because the kind you're after appears to be "write this for me" which isn't the name of the game at all.

Happy to give a few pointers and help the odd facts as in the other thread, but you do need to do the actual work yourself...

Hey, whats up.
Everything is fine, thanks!

1.Character: In what ways are Julia and winston alike? In what ways are they different?

They don't like Party, but Julia is aware that every resistance is futile.

2.Theme: Why does the party permit couples to marry but discourages love?
You can love only Party, but marriage is needed because of children who will later work in factories, etc.

3.Plot: What are Winston and Julia willing to do for the Brotherhood? What is the one thing they are unwilling to do?
They are helping Brotherhood in controlling, but they are unwilling to believe in those ''stories''.

4. What types of things does O'Brien tell them they might have to face as members of the brotherhood?
"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength."

5. What are the 3 superpowers always at war according to the brotherhoods handbook?
Oceania, Eurasia, Eastasia

6.How are Winston and Julia betrayed?

They were caught by telescreen in room above an antique shop.

7. Irony: Julia tells Winston that even though the party can torture a person and make him say anything, they cannot make him belive it.
-How do you feel about this statement?
I don't see irony in that. For 10$ I will say that 2+2=7.24656, but you can't make me believe it. 10$ can also be replaced with gun on my head or knife under my neck; probably thats how Winston felt.

8. How easy is it to brainwash a person?
I don't know, I never tried. Probably hard, I guess.

9. Do you think that governments actually use brainwashing?
No. Atheist will probably disagree :D

Whats up again people.
I've got some things im curious about that hopefully yall can give me insight.
Thanks again.

If I wrote a diary from one of the other characters points of views (Not Winstons)
What are 3 different situations that I could use.

If a constitution for the brotherhood was needed, waht would be some rules, constraints, etc. that would be written.

What kind of tone is used iin 1984.How could I translate that into a poem?

What is the symbolic significance of the clock, the paperweight, the song the prole woman sings, and the nursery rhyme about the bells.

Once Again...............Thanks
