heeeheee, papaya, you asked for it!

do you like Star Trek? which is your fave series/character? would you consider yourself a hard core fan (Trekkie) casual but comitted fan (Trekker) or just someone who likes sci-fi/ a good show?

my fave shows are TOS (Classic), TNG and DS9, fave characters: Picard, McCoy, Spock, Odo, Quark

I don't know what kind of fan I am. I guess I'm a die-hard fan it that it's the only show I watch, but then, I don't know the episodes by heart, have never been to a con, never worn a Starfleet uniform (and I don't intend to, unless I were to make my own fan film), it's been ages since I watched the first 3 seasons of TNG and DS9, I'm a bit sceptical about "the Star Trek philosophy" etcetcetc...
I am going through a phase of Star Trek mania at the moment, though, watching TOS with my hubbie, reading a biography of De Kelley (Dr McCoy) and all that...

will post pics of my heroes soon

HaHa, I think I'd consider myself a trekker. It's not the only sci fi show I watch but it's my favorite. I don't know the episode names, I don't go to conventions, and I don't dress up, but I have been to the Star Trek experience in Vegas, I own a Q teddy bear and a Star Fleet Academy T-Shirt. And I'm desperatly looking for a T-shirt that looks like a Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt but says "Ten Forward - NC -1701-D".

I love me some Riker, and Worf, and Gordy, and Data..

aha, a Riker girl :) what is it you see in him? Picard rules! just joking :) I like Riker, too. to me he embodies everything I like about Americans. i don't find him attractive, though, he's more like an uncle or something.

I like a good sci-fi show, that used to be Star Trek TNG, but it went downhill fast after that. DS-9 kept it going, but Sisko bothered me. He was so obnoxiously self-righteous prophet, John Sheridan Wannabe.

Oh well, Star trek was okay while it lasted. I'll wait and see if the new movie is any good. Picard was the best captain ever. Data I liked too. Quark was fun because he was so obviously flawed. A rare thing in Trek characters, who are usually the humpty dumpty superfluous do good and be merry types.

Best Villain Race was the Borg from TNG, Voyager is forever hated for turning the borg into a boring generic villain.

I own all of Voyager and all of TNG. on dvd. and I've watched them all at least 4 times, if not more. My favorite characters are Picard and Seven-of-Nine. I never could get into DS9 though, so I guess I'm only a trekker.

I would love to have TOS on dvd too. someday....

yeah, Sisko was a pain in the ***. I didn't like the way he'd throw a tantrum whenever anything went wrong. plus his voice is really whiny and it's just ridiculous when he's angry and shouting at people.

I'm sceptical about the new film... I don't like prequels at all... well, let's wait and have some "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" meanwhile...

I've only ever watched a handful of VOY and ENT episodes

Aimus, what's your opinion about Star Trek and turnips? should there have been more turnips in it? ;)

Is Riker considered a sex-symbol like Picard? He is such a goofball, I agree, like someone's uncle.

yep papaya, it's a prequel about Kirk and Spock at the Academy. there's this young guy who plays Spock.. and I think Lenny Nimoy has signed on to play the old Spock, too. .. i thin Walter Koenig and Georgia Takei will be in it, too... not sure though.
grrr, prequels.. as if Enterprise wasn't bad enough... grrrrrrrr, another movie, it can't be worse than Nemesis, though

GENERIC! Supervillain Comic style! The name Venom ring a bell?? :p
Janeway defeated the borg, and she was a mediocre captain at best, utter bollocks I say, just like that species '8472 XYZ trying to be ungeneric villain type' that was oh so powerfull, and then just disappeared all together or something. except for one or two episodes. Voyager had the worst writing of all Trek shows, even Enterprise had better moments.

Aimus, what's your opinion about Star Trek and turnips? should there have been more turnips in it?
It's okay I suppose, but it clearly illustrates the fictious nature of Star Trek, as there are not nearly as many turnips in space as there are in reality. :)

What Janeway defeated the Borg??? How is this so? What about Picard and Data in First contact??? I only watch a few episodes of Voyager and always think "vyger" from the movie.

(Venom?) means nothing to me.

The writing was mediocre, I agree, but it still doesn't take away from the ultimate charm of the show. The only show that had decent writing of any of them was TNG. That's what sets it apart. but I can't help it! I love Seven, I loved the doctor character, I had a crush on Chakotay for a while, and I loved the idea of being thrown 70,000 light years across the galaxy and trying to make it home. and Voyager did manage to hang in there for seven years, even with Janeway as captain. and seriously, as far as female Captains go who do you have to compare her to?

See, that's my point exactly, Picard and Data defeated the queen in the best Star Trek movie to date. Then they ran out of ideas for voyager. (I think the writers ran out after three episodes, but didn't have the brains to realize it for three more seasons. Anyway, I wish they never found out, since the introduction of the borg, while initially promissing, ended up pushing the show beyond mere stupid particle of the weak into a new range of stupid writing. Voyagers kills a dozen or so cubes and other borg ships in the show, and even though they're not the same cubes as in ST: First Contact, it is still dumb, since it took an entire fleet to destroy one big cube, and the voyager is supposedly an averagely armed vessel Science and exploration vessel, not a warship. AND DEFINITELY NO ENTERPRISE!!!!! Like the E, which was best in First Contact, they screwed the ship in Insurrection, making it look like a weak peashooter, and ofcourse Nemesis, aptly named, because this horrible drivel is the Nemesis of All good things... TNG.

I'm a trekker, I can't stand the pure bred trekkies, they're so out of it, but I do like TOS for its quirckyness and TNG for being one of the best Sci-fi shows in history.

Although Voyager did one thing right, and that was bring that terrible writing crew out of known waters and into the other end of the universe, where we thought it could do little harm, boy, was everyone wrong, in seven years, they managed to mess up way more than I could have imagined.

Seven of Nine, well she had some cute outfits which I didn't mind, but if you're looking for a real female hero in sci-fi, watch Star Gate SG-1. Samatha Carter FTW!

Look at me ranting on about ST. :D:lol:

So, I can not watch Voyager and happily believe that Data and Picard got rid of the Borg.

I'm gonna have to watch Nemisis again, I don't remember it being THAT bad. Or I could just watch my Q collection and know I'm getting quality....

Maybe I'll name my firstborn Q instead of Zephron....I mean Q was a mischeivious prankster, Zephron, while achieving warp capabilites was in essence a drunk, but then again what's wrong with a drunk....

That is very cool, BlueSky! I'm a huge Trek fan but only of the original series, I haven't watched much of the other except for a random episode of TNG. I've had a serious thing for Kirk for years now, in fact, it almost got my roommate and I kicked out of our dorm in college. My roommate hated Kirk, you know, the same old, tired argument that he was a sexist, male whore, whatever  so she wrote "Kirk is a slut" on the wall of one of the bathroom stalls. It took me a day or two to find it but once I did, it started of a war of words that raged only on the bathroom walls, we never spoke of it when we were together, our venom was saved for clever little quips written in permanent ink. Eventually, someone brought it to the RA's attention and she wasn't impressed. We got a lecture and a warning that if it didn't stop, we would be kicked out of the dorm...and a can of paint, to repaint the walls.

I know TOS was cheesy sometimes...a lot of the times... but the effects were never what the show was about for me, it was about Kirk, Spock and McCoy and their friendship, which was developed so well over the course of the series and the subsequent movies.

Well, I really only know the orignal. Being an engineer I have an affection for Scotty. I always loved it when he says in his Scottish brogue, "Aye, Captain, she's [the engine] giving it all she's got."

But all boys of my age loved Captain Kirk. With a quote like this, how could ou not. :D :D
"Mr. Spock, the women on your planet are logical. That's the only planet in the galaxy that can make that claim." -- Kirk (Elaan of Troyius)

I'm late joining the conversation (as usual . . . I'm just too busy these days). But I'm so happy there's a thread on Star Trek!

I like TNG but my heart really belongs to DS9 - I think because it's the first Star Trek that I got into. I never really watched Voyager that much. And I have never watched TOS, but I probably should.

From TNG I love Picard. I think when I was younger I liked Riker a lot, but he's too much of a player, it's kind of ridiculous. I mean, does every woman have to fall in love with him . . . ;)

I really like a lot of the characters. I don't find Sisko that annoying, but granted episodes that focus more on other characters are usually more interesting. When I was younger, I had a thing for Odo, but I am now highly disturbed by that fact! My boyfriend hates Jadzia Dax, a lot. I was wondering if anyone else found her as annoying as he does? I don't really mind her.

SleepyWitch

I like Jadzia all right. she's cute, funny, smart... i don't like her slutty side though, like when she invites this half-naked dancer to her hen party. but that's just prudish old me, probably

I'd say I'm a casual fan, but I love the movies. I loved The Wrath of Khan. I also love The Undiscovered Country. I guess I love them all up until the one with the Borg. I stopped watching about there, but I think I've been inspired to have a Star Trek movie fest:) I'll watch them all starting with number 1. That will be my goal when I finish school, maybe. It will only take a few weeks if I watch one every night;)

It was always my theory that for TNG, they split Kirk in half, Picard was his wise, strong leader half and Riker was his player and hothead side. Kirk was just too much man for only one character to fill his shoes. :p ;)

5 was bad though, the one with Spock half-brother?! That was excruciating. I didn't much care for 1 either but I cut it a lot of slack because it was the first one and it was just so great to see them all again, especially on the big screen. Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country were definitely my favorites of the bunch as well but Search For Spock and The Voyage Home were also very good.

Loved the original series, TNG was ok, ok enough for me to watch it for all 7 seasons hoping against hope it would finally replicate the Kirk/Spock/McCoy magic. Not to be. /sigh/ Oh well, it was pretty good and did have some excellent moments...Data as Sherlock and the new twist they played for Moriety was neat.

But no, TOS was the best, hands down.

Have any of you read the books? Some are excellent, one being a total explanation of the Kobayashi Maru (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobayashi_Maru) test....the one Kirk is the only one that has won at the end of training. They explain how he did it.

Another is Star Trek: The New Voyages...a series of short stories that are really excellent.

yes, definitely
nah, seriously, I'm beginning to like Kirk. I think he's much more clever in TOS than in the movies. he's not a "philosopher" type like Picard, but he's always got some practical solution. i even like it when he beats the sh*t out of the bad guy, it's so cool! what I don't like is when he shouts at people for nothing, or yells "I want this and that done" when he knows it's perfectly impossible.

5 was bad though, the one with Spock half-brother?!
i haven't watched that one in years (literally), but I read about it the other day.. it's all Shatner's fault for cooking up this story about finding God. Well, they say Shatner (as a person/actor) is only half as bad as his detractors make him out to be, but still that story.....

http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o120/SleepyWitch/billshatner.jpg

 :D uh,oh Idril will hate me forever!

why did they make up this nonsense about McCoy letting his father die? (De Kelley was very unhappy about it and thought it's out of character)
Bones never struck me as a man with a dark secret like this. What about you?

I read loads of them as a teenager (in German). I've recently bought some in English but haven't read any yet.

The plan is to watch all the TNG and DS9 episodes and then watch the movies. Now he's in California so we watch the Star Trek episodes separately and talk about them. :D

Well, you certainly have earned a black mark in my book. :p ;) I can separate Kirk from William Shatner though, I have at least that much of a grasp of reality :p and I completely agree with you about ST5 being all Shatner's fault. It was like a vanity project for him and he has absolutely no concept of subtlety. Remember that fan dance Uhrua did? The entire movie was just a mess, I simply disregard that one while considering the history of the characters.
