Hidden in the shadows, perched behind trees,
Eyes look from left to right, cautiously following me.
Lurking behind me, so simple minded,
Flashbacks and memories, the creatures behind it.
The past is back, back to haunt,
Bringing all the evil, only here to taunt.
The past becomes the future, once again.
I shake it off, make my way home,
Bit still it follows, stalking me alone.
Faster and faster, I hear it close,
Ready to pounce, a straining ghost.
I run and run, to nowhere near,
Try to clear my head from all the fear,
But it chases me down the dark lonely street,
A desolate place is where we meet.
It’s ready to strike, ready to kill,
I begin to give up, standing still.
Once again, past has won,
Taken me over, shot the gun.

Lurking behind me, so simple minded,

It may contradict my view on rhymes, but I like the assonance in this line!

The last line of the poem, "Taken me over, shot the gun." I do not understand where this is played out throughout the entire poem. What does that mean, exactly? I am quite confused by this. PLease explain...
