BERLIN

sun filters between the concrete pillars
sandaled feet tread cautiously amongst them
weaving a path through the lengthening shadows
startled when strangers unexpectedly emerge

straight lines and clear passageways pull us inward
trying in vain to unravel twisted deceptions
oppressed by the sweltering heat

a city forever divided
despite a shared desire to escape its past
a monument unto itself

Have you ever heard Jennifer Warnes sing Leonard Cohen? I love her rendition of 'First We Take Manhattan'.....then we take Berlin. That was the backdrop in my mind as I read your poem. What a powerful statement, those last three lines.

I haven't heard this version, Amp, but will check iTunes for a copy. Thanks! How can one think about Berlin without thinking of that song?? :)

Thank you very much, Granny. Visiting the Holocaust Memorial was a tremendously moving experience....one that will be with me for the rest of my life.
