Anybody ever heard of the Densa Quiz? A retaliation and comic mocking of the Mensa quiz? Here are some examples:

2. What color is a bluejay?
Red Ultramarine Purple Blue Jonquil

3. Is Lefty Gomez —
Lefthanded Ambidextrous Righthanded Armless

7. Your doctor gives you three pills and tells you to take one every half-hour. You rush home so you can start taking the pills right away. How long will it be before you finish taking all the pills?
90 minutes Three days An hour Each pill is the size of a basketball.

8. You go into a cabin in the woods carrying a lantern, matches, an axe, and a bag of groceries. In the cabin, you find a Franklin stove, a candle in a candlestick, and the usual cabin stuff (like a bed). You put away the groceries. Now it's getting dark. What do you light first?
The lantern The stove The candle A match

How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the ark?

A clerk in the butcher shop is 5' 10'' tall. What does he weigh?

And on and on and on...

21? Really? What letters don't you have?

J K W Y X were called 'the foreign letters' when I was at school... Dunno about now, but I suppose they haven't gained the right of citizenship ;) They're used in words of foreign origin infact.

emily655321

That's so neat. I was trying to go through the alphabet and think of Italian words with each letter in them, but 'X' was the only one I could think of. I knew Hawaiian didn't use some of the letters, but I wasn't aware of Italian. Whee! I learned something new. :)

Nah, it's okay. I get bored on vacations too, although it goes away pretty quickly. ;)

I have all the letters you have, plus one called "Ñ, ñ". Weird, huh?

it's pronounced En-yay. the ~ is a tilde.
i thought ll was considered a letter too, crisaor?

emily655321
06-24-2004, 05:00 AM
"ll" is just two L's right? Just pronounced like "Y"? Like in German you have the ß thing, but all it means is "ss" and can be written as "ss" (such as, if the word is all upper-case, to avoid confusion with "B" -- like, oh I don't know..."flüße" and "FLÜSSE"), so it's not really considered a new letter. Unlike the cedille (Ç) in French. Or do I have this all completely backward? :p

Oh, maybe what I mean to say is, it's like "th" or "sh" or "ch" -- when put together, they make a new sound, but they are still T, H, S, C.

amuse
06-24-2004, 11:59 AM

Does Spanish have W and X?

I don't think LL is a letter...it's a sound but 2 signs... Like emily said, like TH etc...

I have nice accents that are not considered separate letters, just they indicate where the stress is (and in most cases are not necessary): à è é ì ò ù

(Look, I did it again: turned the topic into Linguisitics :D)

mostly spanish just has w because of english i think, like saying washington is a little weird - from what i understand from my tutor.
it has x - i counted 14 letters.

one of my dictionaries lists ll as a letter, but have my text on my lap; it says:
the present day spanish alphabet has 27 letters, the 26 found in english plus the [n with a tilde - enye sounding word that i can't make appear]. in the past, three 2-letter combos - ch, ll, and rr - were part of the spanish alphabet. now they are considered part of the letters c, l, and r.

Yeah, makes sense... But as I said if you count foreign words we end up having those letters too... Like Washington or even an everyday word like Yogurt... Just they're not considered Italian letters and my mind still tells me 'the 21 letters of the alphabet'. I actually wonder if the foreign letters are considered in the alphabet now, as they are probably more common (or at least seen as less strange) than 15 years ago, but I guess not.

emily655321

It's interesting to think of learning "our alphabet" and "foreign letters." English is such a hodge-podge of different languages, though mostly German and French...but a word we don't have just gets incorporated into English, or made up entirely. :p I don't think there's been any attempt to "preserve" any form of the English language throughout its history. Which is why the spelling and grammar is so mixed up. Sometimes the Saxon rule is used, sometimes the French rule, sometimes bad grammar that became "good grammar" over time, sometimes spellings that are so old they make no sense whatsoever anymore. ;) But I like that, cause you can make up new gibberish words and people still know what you're talking about.

Nope, Ñ is a different letter. It's not a tilde (accent mark), that is denoted by a "´".
How Ñ is spelled? It's hard to tell by writing, I guess in english it would be something like amuse said.
amuse, Ll was a letter at some point, as also was the Ch. But that was changed several years ago. Now it's just L, C, and H.

Does Spanish have W and X?
Yes. The confusion might come because in english I belive W is called double v (or double u, I'm a little confused about that). But in spanish we have both the leters you mentioned as separate ones.

emily655321
06-24-2004, 04:21 PM
In English it's "double-U," with the stress on the "dou-" -- so, "DUH-bull-yoo." French is the one where they say "double-V," but it's pronounced more like "DOOB-la-vay."

That's why people call G.W.B. "Dubya." (DUH-bee-yuh) :thumbs_up :p Cause that's how he pronounces it.

You put me in a tough spot, Koa. A word that has the letter W or a word that starts with it? how about whisky (that is the spanish form). I agree, it's not a common word in spanish, its main use is probably to keep original names. I'll look up my dictionary when I get home. ;)
In spanish we say don Quijote. The x is used more often, I can think of xilófono, exacto, exigente, etc.

D'oh, it wasn't that hard to find! (though I dont know that Mikel...but surnames like that sound basque)

Crisaor, whisky is certainly not a Spanish word... It's English, of course normally used in Spanish... A loan word, that is. That was my point, are there originally Spanish words that have W? (also in the middle, I don't mind ;))
That's why those letters are 'foreign' to me, cos they're used for words coming from other languages... of course in Italian there are words like Whisky, Wafer (a sort of biscuits...do you call them this way?;)), even Weekend....can't think of any other at the moment. I'm tempted to take a dictionary out...I must resist...I won't.
Oh...walzer, wurstel, watt, walkie-talkie ...Ok I counted like 25 words starting with W, at least 5 of them I've never heard of. I can easily say they're all loans.
But now that I think about it, some words with X are of Latin origin, cos Latin had X... well, it's still a foreign language:D
(damn I can't place those 5 letters in the alphabet unless I repeat in my mind the English alphabet!)

Didn't find any word that starts with a w that is originally spanish. Only thing was words defining some minerals, but they're probably derivates also. Looking for a w in the middle is almost impossible. Right now, I still can't think of any. Still, w is part of the alphabet.
