Mine is Chatter.
I’ve never established
whether it’s Mr., Ms, Rabbi or
Herr Doktor Chatter, but I suspect
his first name is Mindless.
He can say “Pssst!”
in all of the Romance languages
and, frankly, he often
pssstes me right off!
You blew it, bud,
is one of his favourite lines
again! Or Are you still doing that?
You’ll never amount to much!
Loser! Liar! Still sucking
for attention, eh? And yet
he does it all out of concern
for my well-being!
Yeah! Oh, yeah!

I cannot disclose
The real name of my friend
To anyone but this second myself.
If you need a name, then
Let’s call him Mister Donkey.
He has been there, from the day I was born,
Watching over me.
He is this voice
Whispering,
In a corner of my head,
Always present,
Like this faint sound you keep hearing
In darkest silences.
He brings reassurance
And the greatest wisdom
To soothe my soul
And give me hope.
He eyes me
From the inside
Shows me the way
To self-celebration.
He is participating
In the composition of this poem.
But
Assuredly from a distance.
He pushes the swing
And lets me fly
With the knowledge
That I will land in a safe place.

I love the calm and clarity throughout this and I especially love the last verse! Those first four lines of it brought a rush of tenderness to me, and then the last four lines are so reassuring, especially in the juxtaposition of inner compulsion - "He pushes the swing" - with the release of you to yourself - "and lets me fly"
