View Full Version : Some 80s Nostalgia: Nominate your fav. movie, CD, crush, anything fashion!

let's come to terms with this fundamental fact: the 1980s was the best decade of the 20th Century. and if you didn't live it you certainly heard about it. for all the interesting music that's followed, there's no denying that the 80s music has stood the test of time, with even The Sopranos final episode finishing with Journey anthem Don't Stop Believin.

don't be shy all you 80s Children (i know who you are!) or not ~ list your favorite movie, CD, quote, or fashion piece! or maybe you had a crush on Rob Lowe or Demi Moore?

feel free to post pix too! ---
The (Un)Official Anything 80s Thread.

here's my picks:

Best Album: Diver Down ~ Van Halen; AC/DC ~ Back in Black
Best Song: Walking on Sunshine ~ Katrina & the Waves

sexiest female fashion piece ~ Leg Warmers
For male ~ The Izod shirt

Fav Movie ~ The Lost Boys

My crush ~ Ally Sheedy
(and then Winona Ryder came along) :p

Best movie line ~
"You know how you said before, how your parents use you to get back at each other? Wouldn't I be outstanding in that capacity?" -Bender to Molly Ringwald's character, The Breakfast Club

Boy, the 80's seem like a decade more innocent than the fifties in today's post 9/11 world. In the 80's we didn't have to worry about terrorists or cyclones. The only thing we had to worry about was really big hair. I vote for A Flock of Seagulls here. Their hair was truly distressing.

sexiest female fashion piece ~ Leg Warmers

baaaaah, the 80s were one of the most tacky decades in the history of mankind! legwarmers being one of the main reasons (the others being aerobics clothes.. what do you call them? leotards?, leggins, carroty jeans and bushy hairstyles.

fave 80s song: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper

I hate the aesthetic of the 80's. Other than that, I had a happy childhood in it.

I believe the main 80's nostalgia element for me are the cartoons & series I watched: He-Man, Transformers, Thundercats, The Smurfs, Super-friends, The Batman series with Adam West, Alf, Sledge Hammer, Benny Hill, Get Smart, The A Team, McGyver, Knight Rider, and perhaps others.

Those were good times.

EDIT And I should've never forgotten Looney Tunes or the Pink Panther.

Best Album: a tie between R.E.M's Green album and the Replacements' Pleased To Meet Me

Best Song: I just think that is way too hard to pick but a couple of ones that come to mind right away are Never Say Never by Romeo Void and I Know What Boys Like by the Waitresses.

female fashion fad: tight rolling jeans
male fad: parachute pants

Favorite Movie: Purple Rain

Crush: Well, there is the ever present David Gilmour but just to add a little bit of variety, I'll go with Stewart Copeland of the Police this time. :D

The 80's wasn't all leg-warmers and hair bands and assortments of annoying color schemes; I have three (or two and a half) words for all of you: The Princess Bride.

http://www.filmnight.org/images/pbride.JPG

Any decade that spawned such a movie (not to mention myself, or Spinal Tap, or any number of overlooked 80's masterpieces) is alright in my book.

I remember New Years Eve, I think it was 1984 and I was watching MTV's New Year's Bash. At midnight they dropped about a million ping pong balls on the audience and Jefferson Starship took the stage to sing 'We Built this City'. Grace Slick was pelted innumerable times. You could tell she was pissed, but she couldn't walk off stage. Adam the V-jay was hit by one right in the face and he pointed at the houligan who did it, yeliing,"Oh, I'm gonna get you after the show." And of course that Suzanne Vega looking V-jay, I can't remember her name, congratulated the producers for suggesting the ping pong ball thing. It was defintiely a quintissential eighties debacle, and one of the greatest New Year's memories of my life.

Old Anime! Akira was made in the LATE eighties

(The guy in the girls just wanna fun video looks like my stepddad! Is like a doppleganger or something)

I love the eighties hair! My hair would have been so cool back then and the clothes are pretty cool.

Most of my family still dresses a bit like that.

and the dresses are similar to the one's my family in Spain make.

awesome video, thanks! i think the lauper video is an embellishment of the times, not many people dressed that way, though lauper was quite the trend setter. for guys it was mostly levis and t-shirts. cordoroy pants were in too. workboots were worn for a rugged look. there was the bandana, of course.

i do remember everything, esp. jeans, being worn obscenely tight. nowadays clothes make the curves. in the 80s, the curves made the clothes.

am i right that stretch mini-skirts were a favorite for women back then?

how many of you remember or have seen the Madonna black washer braclets?

How could I FORGET Oingo Boingo?!?!?!?!! I love them! I didn't say ANYTHING about them before. I suck.

And they were the first band I liked a lot that I discovered on my own. And I probably wouldn't have discovered DEVO, either, had I not known about Oingo Boingo.

It's the '80s, idiot!

I don't know the Oingo Boingo question but I do know those lyrics, Round and Round by Ratt. I'm a tad bit embarrassed to say I actually like that song.

oingo boingo (what's the movie when the two geeks create a woman? yes wierd science) reminded me of Toy Dolls, Violent Femmes and Hoodoo Gurus, not to mention the B-52's.

Back to School, with Rodney Dangerfield...

"I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go." :D

I have ths friend at school who just started randomly singing the "Dooooon't run awayyyyyy, it's only me!" part and he has a really deep voice normally so it was ROTFLOL-worthy.

And then they did the theme for Weird Science.

My mommy has a crush on the lead singer, Danny Elfman, which I think is funnier than poo knuckles.

When I tell people my age my favorite bands, they either say, "Who?" or they laugh at Oingo Boingo's name. I think they think it's a dirty word or something. Their loss.

Why were the '80s so awesome? It's hurts to think about it because it's so cool.

I am an 80s boy, the class of '85 to be exact and don't like when folks talk about that decade disrespectfully. It gave us George Michael, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Sulaman Rushdie, DM Thomas and break dancing in the streets. What I like about the 80s:

My favorite 80s song: Big Area by Then Jericho:

My favorite 80s band: Wham

Favorite 80s book: The White Hotel by DM Thomas:

Films: Secretly watched this with my (then) girlfriend at the tender age of 17 (we went on to get married 9 years later in 1996) How we all loved Brooke Shields!

This is the time when being cool meant being outrageously stylish and outré. The 90s enthroned the loser: Beevis and Butt-head, Jackass, the Simpsons, the Rugrats. 80s were all about style, confidence and winning. This was the decade when things happened, things that lasted long, long time (when will Madonna stop?). Compared to the 80s, 70s seem like some prelapsarian age of innocence when boys wore sneakers and sleeves-less jumpers that their moms knitted for them, compared to the 80s, the 90s seem futile, transient and ineffectual. 80s rule!

80's Nostalgia - I used to get off the bus from school and turn on MTV, whichplayed actual music videos at the time. They'd play Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses videos, especially on Dial MTV. Most of the videos on Dial MTV were hair bands ~ men dressed like women and women with poofy Rave hairspray bangs and acid washed, ripped jeans.

Whenever an 80's metal (hairband) song comes on, my husband sings "Panama" even if it's actually Ratt singing "Round and "Round," which is actually on right now. We're actually watching VHI Classic Videos and they're playing the videos I saw in the 80s when I got home from school. And my husband says "Panama" to every one of them.
