Im in 10th grade..and I have to read any book, at a HS level. Does anyone have any ideas for me of good, interesting books? Im not a big reader, so I would like a book that doesnt bore me. For one thing, I do not like science fiction kind of books.

On the Road turned Tom Waits into a juvenile delinquent.

Read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy instead with Nick Cave/Warren Ellis "The Proposition" soundtrack blasting in the background!

Or read "And the *** Saw the Angel" by Nick Cave.

Or "The East of Eden" by John Steinbeck

Or "The Holy Bible" by a bunch of ol' sages. (King James Version).

But of course, since I'm Asian, I advocate some post-colonial literature too. Try out "Harmony Silk Factory" by Tash Aw or "The English Patient" by Michael Ondaatje or "Green is the Colour" by Lloyd Fernando.

Most of these books I read when I was in 10th grade (our equivallent, I think, is Form 4). They've really helped to shape the person who I am today. ANd that isn't neccessarily a good thing

I wish I knew if you were male or female. But, oh well. We sometimes get seeped in 'the classics,' but there is really some good contemporary young adult fiction out there. If your selections can really be wide-open, take a look at this website:

There are even some suggestions for people who don't particularly like to read.

If you need to choose a book that's not too contemporary, let me recommend A Separate Peace by John Knowles. I really like that book. It's all about discovering who we really are -- all the good and bad of being human.

Happy reading!

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is pretty good and recommended by high school teacher everywhere, it's also easy to read and understand even by a 6th grader (like i was when i first picked it up.)

Pride and Prejudice, or Pere Goriot.

Or, if you are looking for a more modern read, try something like Cat's Cradle (though, I must confess I hate Vonnegut).

Journey To The End Of The Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine
Atomised by Michel Houellebecq

Oh wow. I dunno that I'd reccommend either of those for someone's not a big reader...My suggestion would be Salinger. Either the Catcher in the Rye or Franny and Zooey.
