last time i visited my friends in lincoln they had a lovely batch of pumkins and squashes growing in their back garden.

I do know that carving pumpkins is a big deal over here in the U.S.A. and that the tradition came from the Irish
("Celtic," with a hard "c") who used to make lanterns from
turnips in order to frighten away the evil spirits. I don't
know how well it worked -- I for one am still here!
