It occurred to me that I am not using my Netflix subscription to the best of my abilities (ie I'm not getting my moneys worth). with the help of litnet I hope to rectify the situation. Sooooooo, can anybody recommend any good movies??:D

I like anything sci fi, some horror, some thriller, and some comedies, and even a romance or two.....Nothing to brainy, but quirky is good.

I can't recommend good sci fi or horror, but I can suggest some that are funny in that bad horror movie kind of way...

Primevil, Mindhunters, Vampire Wars Fight for the Universe, Feast (bear with me on this one. It is dumb but pretty funny if you read the captions). I don't know where the Boondock Saints falls, but that is a good flick if you haven't seen it. Another pretty good newer release is Pathfinder. Good luck with your movie search.

You might try "This Island Earth" The Thing From another World" "Earth Vs Flying Saucers" The Above are from the 50s and are first ratr Sci Fi. Also anything by Alfred Hitchcock, some of his best were "Strangers On A Train" "Vertigo" "Rear Window" and Psycho."

Hope this helps

I forgot a good one I'd seen lately, but Silent X's ideas reminded me. The Illusionist. It has Edward Norton, and it looks like it may be a knock off of The Prestige. I thought it was actually much better, but it wasn't advertised as much.

I wouldn't even know where to begin to recommend something! I have seen such an insane amount.

Just because I am curious, what deal do you get through Netflix? I was getting the unlimited 5 a month thing, but I eventually caught up to all of my movies and now I just have a couple of movies left on my list. The rest are all films that I want to see (in theaters), but I know I won't get a chance to. So, I just put them on my saved list. Anyway, I cut it down to the limit of only 2 movies a month. I didn't know what else to do as I pretty much had seen every movie that I had interest in! That is how I had to save my dilemma of not being able to take advantage of my subscription when I'd seen all I could think of that was on DVD!

I just thought of one, though. Don't know if you saw it, but how about "Inside Man"? That is the film that I have been recommending lately. I never seem to get anyone to see it, though. I really liked it. I thought it was a very clever suspense film. If you haven't seen it, I'd say to give that a try.

Some sci-fis I liked: Blade Runner, 12 Monkeys, Brazil, Star Wars (the original trilogy), Matrix (only the first one), The Young Frankenstein, Terminator 1 & 2, Back to the Future Trilogy. There's also the Star Trek movie series, which isn't that bad. I liked the first ones plus First Contact, which is a latter one.

Do you mean "Milwaukee, Minnesota"? If you decide on it, let me know what you think? You'll get to see a Milwaukee icon (Goldmann's), which is closing for good next month after 100+ years. :bawling:

Cronenberg's Videodrone is as quirky as they come. Other offbeat gems like The Wicker Man, Rosemary's Baby or virtually anything by David Lynch really stand out. Lost Highway or Wild at Heart are good ones to start with--but of course Blue Velvet is probably his most well known (besides Twin Peaks for those who don't know Lynch). Some less well known ones, if you can find them: I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, Basket Case, Bubba HoTep, The Andromeda Strain and Linkletter's excellent but overlooked A Scanner Darkly (which just came out and should be easy to find).

For horror, I guess you can go for The Ring, Final Destination, Scream and stuff like that...
For romance, A Walk To Remember would be my first choice, there's also Never Been Kissed, I just love that movie, Pride and Prejudice (if you haven's seen it) Becoming Jane is a good romance as well.
As for comdey, I'd go for Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, they're hilarious. Big Mamma's house is awesome as well. Hope that helped..:D

Anime they are paya-- Japanese cartoons, alot of them are quite interesting in that they are completly different from 'hollywood' cinema.
Actually that gives me a thought how about going more global... I know I got bored with the whole main stream hollywood blockbuster thing.

Notes on a scandal was good Well it had Judi Dench in it so obviously it was good. A bit freaky though.

I really enjoyed driving lessons only more because I was amazed to see that the boy that plays Ron Weasley in the HP movies can actually act outside that role.

I watched Un jeu d'enfants or childrens' games/play that was good too although if you watch it someone expain the ending.....
it was sort of a romance but it was more about obsession.

Yes, I definitely recommend watching the Firefly season simply because it's fabulous but it's not absolutely necessary to see the series before the movie. I saw the movie first and didn't have any trouble following or enjoying it. I fell in love with the characters and the feel of the show so I bought the series and then went back and watched the movie again and things certainly had more significance but it's seems a little less intimidating to watch a 2 hour movie than an entire season of shows on dvd...but...after you watch the movie, Papaya, you're going to want to watch the entire season on dvd. ;)

I've seen a few mentions of Brazil which was a wonderfully odd movie, good choice and another one I think every one should see is Harold and Maude. An off beat...and I mean really off beat, romance.

Get anything and everything by both Stanley Kubrick and the Coen Brothers. If you like quirky, try The Royal Tenenbaums and if you like it go ahead and watch the rest of Wes Anderson's catalog. If you're into sci-fi, Blade Runner's a must-see, and I'd say the best of everything else is covered by the filmmakers I already mentioned (except horror, where I guess I'd just have to recommend the first of all the series' that exhausted themselves with far too many sequels--like the original Friday the 13th or Halloween).

I could go all day with several other random movie recommendations, but I won't spend the effort if it's going to fall on deaf ears. Let me know if you want more... I've seen a ****-ton of movies and have a wealth of worthless knowledge on the subject to dispense when needed.

EDIT: I feel like I've failed as a self-proclaimed movie buff since I didn't mention that nobody has ever come close to matching Hitchcock when it comes to mystery/thriller films, and everyone should go out of their way to watch each and every one of his movies.
