Hullo. as many of you know (and if you didn't you do now) I'm a high school student.

So, Friday during Computer design class, my teacher, Mr.S. asks "So guys, what do you think the internet is for?"

The main answer (keep in mind there are only 3 girls in this class) was "The Internet is for Porn"

Do you agree? and if you don't, what do you think the internet is for?

As a programmer I can say this: It was the Pornorgraphy that accellerated the growth of Internet and Internet related technology - from compression technology to Security, from Streaming to Virtual Networks :D As a result of this Businesses grown exponentially on back of this growth :D

the internet has several uses. Entertainment and porn are just one of the many uses. Although, if I were into porn, I don't know that I would necessarily venture online for it.

The internet is also for finding information. Like right now, I am trying to track re-trace my work history from the present to my 18th birthday. It's a major pain and without the internet I wouldn't have the info for a couple of jobs I had in the past (looking for addresses and phone numbers of places I used to work).

Even given to this fact, we shouldn't say that the internet is wholly just for porn. I don't think that even porn started on the internet. There's a wide-spread wave of pornography and sex use in movies, songs and other kinds of media and information sources. If people were exposed to porn only through the internet, life would have been better.
Those who use internet solely for porn are missing on the very essence of using such a service, since you can get that kind of information elsewhere anyways.

Given the fact that we're here, on the internet, submitting to a literary site tells us that it's for more than just porn.

I've found it invaluable as a research tool for writing papers and essays etc, providing of course that you double, or some times triple-check your sources.

I didn't mean that porn started with the internet, I'm quite saying the opposite. I'm just saying that maybe pornography industry is witnessing its golden age now online, but that's not the sole use of this service. So answering Beki's question, I'd say a big NO...Internet isn't for porn, it's for knowledge, narrowing it down to porn is mere ignorance. If porn comes with the territory, then be it, but that's not all that is to the internet.

And I second Scher. I keep getting a lot of guff from people who wonder what a preacher can find to do on "that Godless Internet!" Study a lot of Bible resources I cannot afford to purchace. Chat with other Christians and non-Christians on many subjects. Write poetry and share others. Get to meet people from around the world. Study all sorts of Science. Look up pictures of the beauty of the world's nature. Learn new things every day. Play some decent and very fun games. Create works of art for friends. I block porn on my computer. Why do people always assume the worst?

For the most part yes, individual liberty goes together with free market enterprise. But that does not stop society from establishing moral precepts within capitalism, outlawing illicit behavior such as prostitution and drug use or even fraud or swindling or even gambling. Nor does it prohibit it from establishing proper business practices. These are all in the context of morality. People seem to accept Marxian definition of capitlaism. Marx was wrong on many things, if not all things. Why he is even still taught in school is beyond me.

The internet is for anything that people wish to communicate about. It is for commerce, entertainement, and the discussion of almost anything. If you can't find information about something on the internet, then you just are not looking hard enough. I don't think it is just for porn, but if you are a teenage guy with a credit card then it may seem so:lol: For me the internet is mostly about bringing people together in a variety of different environments. Look at this site... how many different countries do we have members from??? I'm sure this isn't the only site with such a varied membership.
