Well, we're currently studying 'moral and ethical considerations' in my advanced english class. As our core text, our teacher has selected the film 'Dangerous Liaisons', combined with the novel 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'. Naturally, our teacher has asked us to find two pieces of additional material to supplement these texts during exams. However, she's specifically requested that we do not use another novel or film, which could be a problem...

To better understand what I'm looking for, here are some resources relating to each text:

Dangerous Liaisons:

Wikipedia Article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dangerous_Liaisons)
Synopsis and Analysis (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/movies/videos/dangerousliaisonsrhinson_a0a8d4.htm)

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil:

Wikipedia Article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_in_the_Garden_of_Good_and_Evil)
Background and Synopsis (http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-504)

Although there are probably many that I'm missing, here are some of the important themes that I believe both texts deal with;

Morality and ethics
The vanity and double standards of the upper-class/aristocracy
Adultery
Innocence/guilt
Class/racial differences, and social segregation
Loss of virtue
Revenge, betrayal and manipulation

I know I'm new here, and that is is a fairly big ask, but could anyone help me out? It could be a play, a short story, a news article, a graphic novel/comic book, or pretty much anything else that can be analyzed, so long as it isn't a film or novel.

Ive never read the midnight garden but according to wiki ( although I do know its not a reliable source) its not a novel but a nonfiction book.

Anyway aside from that how about a play? oh you already said that. Well with a little fiddling and out of the box thinking you could defiatly get othello to fit that. How about a poem??

While 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' is technically a non-fiction book, my teacher has sort of placed in to the same bundle as the novel, so I have to consider it in that way. And yes, I thought Othello would be appropriate as well. The problem, however, is that we've studied it already, earlier in the year. I'll have to talk to my teacher about it... Maybe I'll look in to one of Shakespeare's other plays, like Hamlet.

Also, a poem would be great if you could suggest a good one. :) I'm currently looking in to 'the crucible'; it sounds interesting and I'm hoping I'll be able to draw some parallels with my core texts.

Hamlet wouldnt cover racisim . humm although you could use sexisim as social segrigation but its a very iffy argument.

How about christopher Marlowe's Faustaus??

Additional texts don't need to cover all of the themes mentioned above, and while racism is a fairly significant issue in 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil', it isn't absolutely vital.

I'll look in to studying 'Doctor Faustus', and get back to you later. Right now, I'm thinking of Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal'; it shouldn't take long to go over, and there are plenty of notes already available on the net.

To Flay: Two plays would work, 1/Long Days Jouney into Night 2/Death of a Salesman...quasimodo1

Okay, I've pretty much narrowed it down now to Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal' and Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible'. Thanks for all your suggestions guys, maybe I'll pop back in one day and say hi.

Cheers! :thumbs_up
