Hullo.

Just saw the "Are women losing their sense of femininity?" thread and thought: What the heck?!

While is true that modern women aren't as feminine as they were, say, 100 years ago. Modern men are not so manly either:

They wear pink frilly objects, skirts, girl jeans, get manicures, pedicures, hair-dye, go to spas and spent more money on make-up and care products than 50 years ago.

So....if women are losing their sense of femininity, are men losing their sense of masculinity?

To quote the lovely, yet masculinely challenged Rufus Wainwright

"Men reading fashion magazines, oh what a world it seems we live in, straight men..." (Oh What a World)

Says it all for me ;)

how do men define their masculinity? Is it by what women think of them, what other men think or what they themselves think?

Yes, and not to mention plastic surgery. Nowadays more and more men have their wrinkles smoothed, fat removed, nose straightened etc etc

Lote has a good point, that maybe some are but not all..?

And also, what one culture describes as masculine isn't universal, or a positive thing necessarily. Not going in the idea of gay or feminine, but would so many guys around here consider meditating in a retreat or spending time at a monastery "masculine"?

And, all the fuss about men wanting to be fair. We get fairness creams for men too here. I never thought men wanted to be fair  I always heard that men were supposed to be Tall, Dark, and Handsome. What will it be now -- Tall, Fair and Handsome :p Well, the cream is also called Fair and Handsome

I think since the power has shifted to give women a greater role in the business world that people have become more confused. No one knows who is supposed to be wearing the pants. Although I'm glad to see a time when women have been given a greater voice, I am a bit perplexed by my own role in this new set-up. It's hard to tell what being 'masculine' really means when we're getting all kinds of mixed messages.

Ok, for the last time its a kilt!:p As for the rest of it nope none of it applies to me, I own nothing pink; only wear blue Wrangler jeans; dont know what is even involved in a manicure/pedicure; only once been anywhere near a spa (and that was to collect a girl I was seeing at the time - she was there refurbishing herself); I never buy care products (get given enough deoderant/aftershave at Xmas to last the year):D

Serious answer is that with advances in technology and the consumer driven society, men no longer have to be as rugged and capable as in the past. Which is a good thing for a large number of men I know who have zero understanding of how to complete any tasks which involve even slight DIY knowledge.

Nope! I know what a kilt is since my relatives own several. I mean it's really popular in high schools, clubs and such women's skirts (in reds, pinks and such which look NOTHING like a kilt) over pants. Guys wear them all the time.

Go Kilted! :D

So....if women are losing their sense of femininity, are men losing their sense of masculinity?

Or: are men bored?

I am sure I have no idea what you mean:p . Left to my own devices I buy store brand stuff or the cheapest I can find, I am happy with this - however others think it smells worse than wearing nothing so they buy me the other stuff

You're lucky Kilted. All I get for Christmas Is sleazy lingerie which I really don't need! Or cheap jewelry. Why wasted 10 bucks on a ring when you can buy me two five dollar books which i do like?!

I'm sure you would pray to have the deodorant gifts back at the first sign of a pretty pink stone ring!

I LOVE IT! Thank you. THIS IS AWESOME.

Wasn't there a fad a decade or two ago where men wore lipstick?

I really do think there are more important things in this world to think about and fix though, rather than one's "femininty" or "masculinity". XD I really don't think we're ALL going to end up less feminine and masculine to the point of a gender apocolypse or whatever. :p

Ok, clarification: I no longer have to buy anything, people give me stuff so as to discourage me from choosing it myself:lol:

I wish I got socks...my sister was sensible and asked for socks for her birthday--I should have done that.

Talking about men losing their masculinity..i know lots of the so called "metro sexual" guys (dated a few ;) ). The good thing is that they look really nice (the ones i dated at least). The bad thing is that they need far more time than me to get dressed, they spent way too much money when shopping (i don't) and they are always looking themselves in mirrors (and whatever can serve as a mirror, including screens, car windows etc  ). Oh and of course you don't know what to buy them for a present, since they already have everything and are more informed in terms of fashion
On the other hand, my current bf is quite different (thank God). He always wears black or blue or grey (nothing pink ;) ) the only product he uses is jel for his hair (and that with considerable moderation) and i know what to buy him as a present (more blue or black or grey clothes since he hates shopping and i am forced to do it on his behalf ;) ). I prefer it that way ;)

nowadays, we do have the term "metrosexual", used for men who spend more money than we girls do on things for vanity. but i don't think that that is men losing masculinity. i think that more important than staying true to what the scripts of our respective sexes are is being true to oneself. kind of cliche to listen to, i admit, but.. don't cliches become cliche because they are terribly true?

Bakiryu
09-01-2007, 04:46 PM
i don't think metrosexuals want to be true to themselves, they just want to look good :D

You know I hardly think that metrosexuals are a new phenomenum its just we as a society have decided to push them apart.

Thinking about the sun king and his shoes. And Lord Byron..ok bad example well dandies of his time. Dudes of the 1890s ( was dudes or did they come earlier/later) I could go on for ages .... their are enough examples in literature of the various eras.

Bakiryu

Exactly. There have been metrosexuals for ages (i love Lord Byron )
