Handbags and Shoes
Can anyone tell me why women are obsessive about Handbags and Shoes?
What evolutionary process lead women to be obsessive about Handbags and Shoes - anyone?
What is the evolutionary thinking behind it?
Here is my theory:
In our evolutionary past we were "Hunter Gatherers" - Big macho men went to hunt the Woolly Mammoth with long spears and women well, women went to do the "gathering" I suppose. So the women needed something to put their gathered berries or birds eggs etc - so they invented a bag - a HANDBAG :D - are you following me so far? :D
And the SHOES? Well gathering requires a lot of walking so they need something to protect their soft soles on their feet and so they invented the the SHOE :D
If you have any different ideas please do tell us...together perhaps we can make a scientific breathrough in understanding the species called WOMEN! :D
If you are man and are obsessive about Handbags and Shoes I suggest that you seek some serious counselling :D
Regards,
Lote
(I have posted this on another forum and got really amusing theory as to why women are obessive about Handbags and Shoes...let see if LitNet can do better :D - this thread is meant to amuse and not offend ok ;-))

Right, then I'm abnormal, too. I own just a few pairs of shoes and only buy new ones if the old ones are so run-down I can't walk in them any more or if I need a pair for a different kind of weather (sandals, boots). As for handbags, I own two, a big one for every day use and a small one for festivities.
Saves a lot of time and money - and nerves (I hate shopping. Why should I go out never finding the right thing if I can sit in a comfy and read a book?) :D

I'm not buying it. Here's the problem: Men being hunters needed shoes and handbags more so then women.
Men needed bags to carry around their extra spears, knives and such...also where did they put the game they killed??? In their purses...
Sure women needed a place to put all our berries but those went in baskets that we carried on our heads.
Shoes, men needed to run quickly to chase animals and such, shoes protected them. As opposed to women who only had to walk. Heck I could walk all day in bare feet. but running? I'll need some skips.

Men have tougher feet.
Can you walk down a gravel path at midday without wincing?
I do wonder why so many women seem to obsessed with shoes and handbags. I usually wear flips flops until they break and only own some mall bags for school.
Maybe we should make this a discussion about why some women choose to waste their money on such things when they could be using it for something else

I can walk on gravel barefoot, and on hot pavement. I have very tough feet from going barefoot all the time. But now that I'm no longer able to bear children, Poppy has let me start to wear shoes so they may soften up.
Now, purses and handbags are another matter. I have lots of big handbags that I use to carry his fishing equipment in. That way I can follow behind him as he goes fishing, he doesn't have to wait for me to run back to the car to get what he needs.

how about that! Were they always hand bags?
Men have tougher feet..
That is in no way true. My husband works hard on his feet all day, but they are as tinder as can be. Actually I can't think of a single man that has tough feet. I keep a large garden and often gather with no shoes, but I do take a basket or make one out of my shirt.
Women needed the bags more than men....
Men used quivers, they are bags.
But most women carry more than a wallet. We have all of that mail, receipts, gum, odd bits of trash, note book for writing, mace, assorted pens, candy that gets snuck in to the movies, cell phone, mints, sunglasses, diaper and wipes, feminine supplies, a bottle of water, good book, planner, and maybe Hoffa in there. Just because we need a bag doesn't mean that there is an obsession!
Maybe we should make this a discussion about why some women choose to waste their money on such things when they could be using it for something else
Now that's a good question.

I hate shoes. I hate wearing them and I hate shopping for them especially. There used to be a commercial for a shoe store on TV here and it was like a Discovery channel program about lions in the wild hiding in the grass and pouncing upon their prey, except in the commercial, it was women in the shore store.
It's like that in the shoe store. I hate shopping for shoes because I will be standing there in front of a display, looking for a shoe in my size and some woman will come up beside and stand there in my bubble waiting for me to move so that she can search the space I am in for a pair of shoes. A lot of women do this, and I ask that those women stay away from another women who is shoe shopping. When that woman makes her selection and steps away from the display, then you are free to go stand there. But never stand there "waiting" next to someone who is shoe shopping because we all know that you are trying to psychically will that person out of your way.
The same principle applies at the grocery store: respect the bubble. Please don't nudge my ankles with your little shopping cart because you can't wait to get out the door.

*glances at beat-up converse and tries to reach for non-existant "handbag"*
I'm not sure about the origins, (your explanation, Lote, seems to be reasonable) but there's defintely a type of..."expectancy" I think, for women to be feminine and like those kinds of things. It's pressure. People will think you're a lesbian if you're not girly enough. I get it all the time. Actually, not so much as now, but earlier in my life. Which makes no sense because I'm only 15. (Yes, we're pressured early. It's...ridiculous. Ever since I started middle school, I think.) I don't carry a purse, I have a black knapsack, which apparently isn't "feminine" I guess. I just deplore being noticed (at least like in a "you're so pretty" sense) so it's hard for me to wear "cute shoes", wear a skirt more often, (I only wear them on special occasions) and carry around a...purse. *insert awkward teenager look here* Plus a lot of that stuff is really uncomfortable and impractical. I have P.E., and I can't afford to change my "cute" shoes to sneakers everytime. Plus I'm too lazy. Almost all the people I admire the most are males. I'm just like that...so I guess it affects my "fashion sense". *adjusts fake glasses*
Sorry to spew off on a tangent. ^^'
Hey, what's with the massive amount of feminine topics here?

I love shoes, I really do. Handbags, not so much. But shoes . . . mmm. I especially like trendy sneakers and quirkier dress shoes. And I especially like getting expensive brands on super-sale at the end of the season. I have acquired most of my favorite pairs of shoes that way.
Sometimes I think it's because putting something strange, bright, odd, or a bit daring on your feet is much less daunting than elsewhere on your body. I don't have to worry if I've done something horribly wrong, because after all, it is only my feet! I let my shoes express the fashion creativity that I'm often too shy to express elsewhere.

Because the right shoes not only look cute, but they can make your legs look longer, make you seem taller, and firm your butt and legs :D Shoes are amazing little contraptions.
My! I never knew they could do that. I spend so much time looking at all the other things that you list, I guess I never have time to admire the contraptions that make all those other wonders possible.

I been wonderin' the same question Lote. . .why shoes?
I mean, why not shirts? Scarfs? Or hats?
Are women obsessed with feet? Do they look at other peoples' shoes/feet a lot?
Are they embarrassed about their feet (and seek to cover them up)? . . . . yeah, really, why shoes?
I've heard that's because the size of the feet is constant. The circumference of waist, hips and bust tends to vary constantly, but the size for shoes is always the same.

And a pair of these to wear at work. That would make me happy. Some of the shoes you guys wear are pretty, and I'm even a little envious of your ability to wear them, but I my guilty secret is I love squishy, comfortable shoes!

mkhockenberry, You forgot to mention that they also can throw your back out. I went to the mall one year Christmas shopping with fairly high heel boots on and I ended up with sciatica. I had to go to therapy for 6 weeks and I was in dire pain all through the holiday season. I can't figure out how women are wearing those 5" heels these days. I wouldn't be able to even stand in those now. Seriously, I have heard drs say those high heel shoes are not good for anyone's back. Maybe gimissung has a point there.

I'm three years late to this conversation, but oh well.
I will be honest, I think hand bags are awsome and really very fun to make. They are very, very diverse. I remember my friend made one for his ex out of a couple white bandanas and a couple zippers it ended up pretty cool. I made on for my ex as well out of cheata print fabric. Hand sowed the thing, made it real strong but alas, she never used it -_-. I think she just tossed it in her closet. All the same, I think their cool. Shoes bore me though, I like boots and slip on vans and thats it.

I bought a pair of comfy shoes. They were comfy on the soles of my feet but torn up my heels.

Qimi and Janine, you both have excellent points, but I still love them. I'll make a podiatrist a very happy doctor one of these days. I actually just wear them for work mainly, but I also have some pretty pairs of ballet flats that I wear too. I notice when you wear high heels too much, it starts to hurt to stand flat footed.

Hey, that is brilliant! Ideal solution to my problem. While teaching in different classes, I keep putting my bags under the chairs/desks and their bottoms gets worn out very quickly. Having these cute, clever, little feet would prevent that!
Thank you for posting this, Papaya! :D

mkhockenberry, it's not the podiatrist alone I am thinking of, but the orthepedic/neurologlic surgeons, who tell you your back/spine is all messed up and you will need to have it reparied. Believe me, it happens; I know first hand and it's a painful endeavor. I was lucky, later on, when I got the sciatica attack, that physical therapy helped; but with my lower back pain and my back history, I can't afford to wear any heels anymore and end up in surgery again. I have tried about a 2" heel and I can feel the strain. Suit yourself but maybe try not to wear them for long walks or long periods of time. They can be brutal. I don't know how these dancers can dance in those high heels and still be able to walk afterwards.
That bag and shoes are hilarious! You two are a team!

Here's a question, I am itching to get a new handbag. I set a goal for myself to do something in the next four months, if I reach the goal I can get a new handbag (I've set aside some money for this purchase). That's all well and good however, I could really use a new summery purse would it be wrong to purchase an inexpensive everyday purse now?

Blokes point of view. Nah, morally indefensible. Spend it on wine, and we can share it. Then you won't need the purse, will you? (Please note that these views do not necessarily represent the views of the management, i.e. my wife!)

erm, uh-oh. See, I had a rewards coupon..and well there was a big sale. One purse was marked down from $75 to $36, plus the 30% off sale plus my 10% rewards coupon. :blush2: AND I found the perfect not to small black purse for more formal events equally marked down. How could I pass that up??:gnorsi:

No, no, Papaya, take no notice of her - every girl needs a handy little black bag for formal does and you'll never find one when you need one. Buy it while you see it, it's an investment. It's something quite separate from your Four Month Plan. And anyway, it's your birthday.

My handbag's strap's just gave way... So, now, I have no choice but get myself a new handbag before the school starts.

All that time I have to spend in the store or on the internet, browsing, trying to find the right handbag...

And wisely too, dafydd - you would not be able to withstand the collective force of our handbags. Papaya has considerably more than that Little Black Bag and the rest of us have some mighty weapons we can call into action. You understand of course that all personal differences will be put aside in the face of Male Intervention - the cheek of it.
Unless of course you have a handbag you would like to pit against us, dafydd????

I need a new bag too. Its starting to tear at the straps, i've holes in the pockets thanks to a rogue mini bottle of perfume the slipped threw a small hole while on my way through Toronto airport in Jan that meant i had to rip the hole bigger to get out. :( I've had the bag for years and i cant imagine not having it. You'll know the bag i'm on about as its in every photo of me out and about from the last three or four years. :(

It seems like bags and shoes are the two things that no matter how old and decrepit they become, I just won't let go of them. My friends refer to my favourite shoes as my Hobo shoes because they are so dead that my toes poke out the front. So I glued them back together :D. And now my favourite bag as started falling apart as well. One handle is held on with safety pins and it's sort of stained in places. I maintain that it gives them character :D
Anyone else have things they just can't get rid of, no matter what?
