Hello there, I am the author of this piece as you might have guessed,:yawnb: I thought I might write this whole story but thought it best to get the opinion of other before I start investing time into it. The general idea up to this point in the story is there is Demeter, young boy whose parents have died in spite of this leaving him with social difficulties, hardly talking, has developed a large intelligence and as he is secretly tutored by his teacher, Mr. Rodgers, to nurture this. As a result Demeter has become attached to his teacher and idolizes him. This extract deals with some of Demeter’s thoughts and opinions. This is particularly interesting as it also deals with the moral Christian standards originally instituted by Demeter’s parents and Demeter’s grandmother’s attempts to make him more sophisticated and how it has effected their relationship. Please give me your opinion. This is my first time so if i made any fatal error please point them out to me :yawnb:

“Defiance is wicked, horrid thing that causes havoc and upsets all those affected”, cracked the voice of my grandmother. The adults all mumbled in agreement with very pompous “quite” and “dreadful thing”. However what my grandmother said stuck onto me, being whispered into my ears again and again by spirits craving answers. This one sentence sent my mind into a flurry. I found myself pondering why defiance has the power to be such a hated thing. I suppose one person not following the rules could encourage others not to, causing a complete disregard of the rules to begin with resulting in fires springing up all over town, windows being shattered, home raided, precious treasures thieved and Sissy next door moving seven moves in monopoly when she only rolled a five. Or even worse, he could take my grandmamma too, the man who took mama and papa, make her into a stone sheet as well. I wouldn’t be able to see her anymore, the big bang would make her a stone sheet, and even though she doesn’t run around and uses a hanky and icky spit to get smuts off my face, and yells really loud when I don’t wanna go to bed, I wouldn’t want that, ever, cause stone sheets can’t give me cookies or play with me or give me huggles… like mama and papa used to… but alas I digress too much.
Although this, in theory, is possible it lacks evidence when considered that some choice, misguided, citizens still do break the law and others still choose to strictly follow them, just like grandmother. However this may just be as there are punishments in place opposed to people choosing to follow law from a moral obligation and they fear the consequences of not following it. So if enough people were defiant then vast changes would have to happen as there wouldn’t be enough punishment for everyone. As people fear change then defiance must be evil. However Mr. Rodgers said that once black people were slaves and were considered substandard in comparison to white people and they suffered great segregation, Mr. Rodgers said that’s when two groups of people get separated because of preju.. prejuidire... prejuic, well I don’t know exactly but I know its because of something really awful. I would be most distraught being separated from black people because then me and Micky couldn’t be friends anymore and I couldn’t stand that. It would be like splitting up ying and yang or day and night. Apparently however when their was segregation, especially in the southern states like Mississippi –Sissy taught me a rhythm to remember how to spell that- the black people to defy laws and be rebellious to just treatment and fair right which then caused an alteration to the law so black people were treated equal, a great thing in my opinion. I especially liked when Mr. Rodgers told me about this one very courageous man named Martian Luther King Jr. who changed things but did it though peaceful means, truly a hero from what I’ve heard about him but someone else disagreed and unfortunately he was assassinated before his time. So if defiance changed things for the better then it cannot be evil or wicked can it?
Before I had opportunity to finish my philosophizing I was clutched by the bony claws of Grandmother and hoisted onto her aged old lap covered with a faded tartan skirt so I was face to withered, creased, old face with her. In the most patronizing tone in front of all her friends and Auntie Chris said “And what does my big eight year old boy think about his new head teacher and all the people causing her sooooooo much trouble” Almost with visible strain she bobbed her knees up and down begging me too speak. I merely responded by spiting my tongue out with a large, notable “Blaaaa” sound before leaping off my grandmother and stamping away. I was none too fond of that new head teacher, she was overly friendly to Micky and really mean to everyone else. “Sorry about that, I think he’s a bit grumpy” Said grandmother. Lowering her volume to that which was meant to inaudible to me but failed in doing so whispered “And I think a little slow too, he might not understand what’s happening”. I was filled with an on pour of anger but I could still feel the redness of embarrassment creep like a burglar with intent to steal my dignity onto my face. Just as I was about to slam the door under the remarks of another guest “I do agree” I heard the faint sound of my favorite auntie giggling at my great humiliation and tear began to consume my sight making the next room a blur.
