My heart goes out to anyone affected by this. I hope no one from Lit Net is involved. I'm particularly thinking of Manolia. Hope you are well.

More than 30 forest fires raged out of control across southern Greece for a third day on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of dozens of villages and threatening ancient Olympia, site of the first Olympic Games.

The death toll reached 58 and was expected to rise as firefighters reached isolated mountain settlements in the western Peloponnese, the hardest-hit region. Most victims died trying to protect their homes or were trapped in cars as they fled from the blaze, police said.

Costas Karamanlis, Greek prime minister, declared a nationwide state of emergency and called a halt to campaigning for the country’s September 16 parliamentary elections.

Athens on Sunday night offered a reward of up to €1m for information leading to the arrest of arsonists believed responsible for starting the fires, the public order ministry said in a statement.

Responding to an appeal by Mr Karamanlis for international assistance, six European Union states and Israel on Sunday sent more than 30 water-dropping aircraft to bolster Greece’s overstretched fire-fighting squadron, the foreign ministry said.

Yes, this is terrible, all the more so because arson is suspected. How unscrupulous must someone be to put so many lives at risk?

I hope litnetters and their families are all right.

Pretty lame alright. On the evening news today they were saying fires are burning in half the country! Awful!

I heard that they thought they had prevented it from reaching the site of the first olympic games; that's all I know.

Thanx for your concern Virgil. I am ok.
Both the archaelogical site and the museum in Olympia were saved but i can't say the same for the beautiful forests around the area..which means that it was half a success there since the landscape was very beautiful and added greatly to the feeling of awe and admiration one felt when entering the site :(

The fires only yesterday were 170, most of them in the Peloponnese. There was a new fire every almost half an hour literally! Today we had only 30-40 new fires...
The ones near Athens were extinquished almost instantly. The same goes for every big town (there were 6 near my town yesterday which were all extinquished instantly). It is like they are trying to burn people and not forrests. The villagers are the ones mostly affected. 63 burned alive till now and many have losts their homes and all their belongings. Police and army is doing a great effort to evacuate many villages in the Pellopones (and there are a lot!).
