I found it in an extra closet
Hanging at the very back.
Faded and dusty and sad
a long pale blue dress with
lace all down the front and
cuffs with buttons up to there.
A beautiful dress in its day
and an important part it played.
I wore it only that one night
And could never wear it now.
“Should I toss it out” I ask the boss
“No” his quite voice replied.
“You changed my life and made me
whole the night you wore that gown.”
So we put it back into its bag and
zipped it all around. But what to do
instead of letting it just be?
“The girls can cut a handkerchief and
carry it when they wed. Or maybe
make a baby’s blanket for great
grandchildren that come round.
Maybe make a quilt with it and other
notions that make our life so full.
Or maybe just leave it there so we can
remember the night you wore
that lovely little gown.”
