, tell us a movie you thought had a perfect ending. :)
here's my pick: Powder. in the last scene of the film, Powder flees from the police and runs across a field in the rain with his arms open wide welcoming a bolt of lightning, which turns him into pure energy. now that's philosophical. :p

Breaking Away -- 80's film is great.
The "Italian Cutter" makes it to college and meets a girl from France, and his Dad is healthy and happy riding a bicycle. Great film.

Oh, I loved that movie! I was obsessed with Dennis Christopher for awhile after watching that movie...I'm such a girl sometimes.

What fantastic taste you have in films Nick - one of my personal faves.
The Usual Suspects has a great ending. Who is Kaiser Soze?

There are so many, hmm, Psycho for one, The Seventh Seal, Once Upon A Time in America, Double Indemnity, The Wild Bunch...

I forgot about that one. One of the only movies Roger Ebert has wanted to re-review to give it a thumbs up.

I still can't figure out what happened at the end of Once Upon A time in America? I've been meaning to rent it again but haven't gotten around to it...Soooooo if you could tell me:D There was a garbage truck....

Braveheart - the scene where Robert the Bruce draws his sword and yawps, "You have bled with him, now bleed with me!" that's a good ending, darn good ending. :)

I only know of a book with a perfect ending. (Perfect--in the sense of being almost flawless): Stepping on the Cracks by Mary Downing Hahn.

You're asking a lot, I haven't seen it in a while. De Niro is in the opium den, high as a kite and remembering his past while Noodles escapes on the garbage truck right? It just made the whole thing seem like a flashback or a dream. I need to see it again.
Thought of some others. The final shot of The Passenger is great. The end of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Lord of War, The Thing, Martin...

I loved the ending for Dead Poet's Society. It just fit so well. The endings for Naked Lunch was another good one. Such existential agony there. I guess I don't go for those 'happy' endings...
Okay, a few more popped in my head. Crimes and Misdemeanors. The Exorcist. How about the endings for The Wicker Man or Rosemary's Baby? Intentionally comic or not, I still love them in all their self-reverent absurdity. Come on, a man trapped in a giant burning wicker effigy while madly shouting out snippets of the Bible??!!? Give me more irony like this and I will gladly see the sequel...

Yes, yes, Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Two come to mind...
Apocolypse Now...once you realize that it IS NOT a Vietnam/war movie, rather it is about the depths of the human soul. Especially when Martin Sheen's head rises out of the water and when Marlon Brando stands tall for the final blow....
And Seven...all I can say is "become...wrath." Yikes. Gives me chills just writing this.

Also Lost in Translation - though I imagine some will disagree with that one.

that was when Scarlet Johansson was looking good. it's all that plastic surgery, botox stuff. :p
i actually liked the end of that one. the romantic he was he got out of the cab and ran to her. we weren't privy to what he said in her ear---maybe he told her he'd be back to see her, or that he loved her but could never live there. whatever, the ending was real life.
so speaking of Bill Murray, i'm going to nominate his Broken Flowers film. :thumbs_up

ohhhhh, that makes more sense. I thought he jumped in the back to kill himself, which seemed really odd to me.

Without doubt the most perfect movie ending I can think of is that of Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. I never make it through that final fade out without tears, and the way the music goes on after "The End"...!

I am not one particularly for "chick flicks" but I just saw the movie Definitely, Maybe, and the ending was pretty awesome. But I won't give it away since it is a new one.
Right when you think the movie will end, you find out it doesn't...and I love it when that happens.

Speaking of chick flicks, I love the movie 'Return to Me' with Duchovny and Driver!
The whole plot, characters, ending, all the awkward moments in the movie, I love...

:p I've not seen that one!!! Perhaps I should be more of a girl.
Actually, you know what one of my favorite movie endings is.....the ending to the Nightmare before Christmas. Now I guess you could say that is my favorite chick flick...which isn't one to begin with.

lol...I think you should see 'Return to Me'...it's not too unbelievable.
It's actually very realistic.
To begin with, the characters aren't perfect. And the movie explores real life problems, decisions, and reactions.
Enjoy the movie, grace!

:D You've figured me out...I hate that so many chick flicks have predictable or very very corny endings.
But thanks, next time I am renting movies, I will see if I can pick that one up!

I agree %1,000. Best ending ever, hands down. I'm tired of forced happy endings. I want an ending that is going to leave me stunned. An ending that I will walk away from saying, 'wow' and it won't leave my head for days. Seven did that. Another one that comes to my is Mulholland Drive. First time I saw that movie, I layed awake in bed for like 3 hours thinking about it.
