I used to think that the title signified Mr. Darcy's pride and Elizabeth's prejudice about him. But an essay that i read completely changed my viewpoint. It said that almost every character in the novel has a bit of both. I am writing some general examples and you can look up the related statements/quotes in the text:
-The most general point that Darcy is proud of his upbringing and social status which is quite obvious in his behaviour towards the Longbourn people. He is proud of his righteousness. He is also proud of his sister.
In his turn he is prejudiced about the behaviour of Longbourn people (and is quite rightly so in some cases).
-Lizzy believes in first impressions ( which, incidentally was the original title of the novel) and becomes quite PREJUDICED about Mr. Darcy at their first meeting and hastily judges him to be rude and arrogant (which is not quite true). At many points, her words suggests that she is PROUD of her own judgement and cheerfulness.
she is even prejudiced about Wickham's 'good' character.
- There is all the pride of high birth in lady catherine and the bingley sisters.
well, i don't know if any of these points answer what u asked for, but i could think of only these.
About the concept of equality, you can use the points of equality (and inequality) on social, financial and intellectual basis between all the marriages that happen - wickham-lydia, lizzy-darcy, jane-bingley, charlotte-collins and mr. and mrs. Bennet. u can talk about financial equality as determining relationships which did not happen though were supposed to like darcy-caroline bingley,, bingley-georgiana etc.
Also there was this unequal marriage of lizzy's parents.

I need examples of pride and prejudice from the novel pride and prejudice...its for an essay due in my AP english class next monday and I have no clue what I'm doing so if someone could help me out that would be great! oh yea i also need to show concept of equality in the novel.Examples of Pride-
Darcy- "...I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men" ch.3
Mrs. Bennett concerning Mr. Darcy- "...related, with much bitterness of spirit and some exaggeration, the shocking rudeness of Mr. Darcy.
``But I can assure you,'' she added, ``that Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy; for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high and so conceited that there was no enduring him! He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great! Not handsome enough to dance with! I wish you had been there, my dear, to have given him one of your set downs. I quite detest the man.''" ch.3
the Bingley sisters- "They were in fact very fine ladies, not deficient in good humour when they were pleased, nor in the power of being agreeable where they chose it; but proud and conceited."
Examples of Prejudice-
Mrs. Bennett (positive prejudice)- "``Oh! my dear,'' continued Mrs. Bennet, ``I am quite delighted with him. He is so excessively handsome! and his sisters are charming women. I never in my life saw any thing more elegant than their dresses."
Darcy- "Elizabeth, having rather expected to affront him, was amazed at his gallantry; but there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody; and Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger." ch.10
Elizabeth- "she found herself suddenly addressed by Mr. Darcy, who took her so much by surprise in his application for her hand, that, without knowing what she did, she accepted him. He walked away again immediately, and she was left to fret over her own want of presence of mind; Charlotte tried to console her.
``I dare say you will find him very agreeable.''
``Heaven forbid! -- That would be the greatest misfortune of all! -- To find a man agreeable whom one is determined to hate! -- Do not wish me such an evil.''" ch. 18
the concept of Equality-
(Lady Catherine and Elizabeth speaking)- "...The upstart pretensions of a young woman without family, connections, or fortune. Is this to be endured! But it must not, shall not be. If you were sensible of your own good, you would not wish to quit the sphere in which you have been brought up.''
``In marrying your nephew, I should not consider myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far we are equal.''
``True. You are a gentleman's daughter. But who was your mother? Who are your uncles and aunts? Do not imagine me ignorant of their condition.'' ch. 56
I wish you good success on your assignment.

The themes of pride and prejudice runs throughout the nove, hence the title. Elizabeth is very prejudice. One of my favourite lines of the novel comes from Elizabeth. I cannot remember the exact quote but she said, more or less,
that she cant fall in love, or dance, with a man that she had decided to hate. She was prejudice at first, and when she starts to realise her prejudice was wrong she said she could not go back on her decision because her pride would become shattered. i think its around chapter 16. give or take 5 chapters.
I think that is one of the most important quotes in the novel, along with when Darcy says 'she is tolerable, but not handsome enough for me. (chapter 3)
I love this novel... it is an outstanding piece of write, but complicated at first. When you have finished to book... only when... Watch the film. Not the one with Kiera Knightly in though because that is nothing like the book. It is better to watch the bbc version. It isn't too old. But it is closer to the novel and will help you to understand what happens. If you watch it before you will end up thinking you don't need to read it... BUT YOU DO!!!:nod::nod:
It's an amazing novel and do not miss out on the chance of reading it... im begging you to give it a chance. yes i admit it is boring at the beginning, but you really get into it when you get closer!
Wow! that was long! thanks for reading! :D
