Right below my love of a blonde headed lady, my number two passion is fly fishing. In this sport you meet some quirky folks, good folk mind you, but sometimes purist of a different sort. Now I don't fit into that category, I consider myself sane ;) ... Among this sport is the art of tying flys. Here you are combining the right amount of materials on a tiny hook to entice a piscator, which by the way has the brain the size of a green pea. Among these artists are those that like to swap their flys to show off their skills.
I composed a little ditty just for those tyers who are so pleased with their work they forget the purpose.

Fly Swaps; in Generalities

Sitting before my desk, I am amazed at the array
of tools, fur, feathers, tinsels, and threads of every color.
Oh, and the expense, road kill is not cheap.

Many inclined to indulge in dressing a hook seem
to do so for the visual pleasure of other fishermen.
But, most importantly the fish don’t care.

The poem and the fly are very nice, but the intro is best. Thanks!

I still have a bag of lovely yarn bits with all kinds of embilishments

Poppy, beauty in trout flies is in the eye of the beholder - as you rightly observe fish are colourblind. Authentic size and movement are greater attractants. The poem suggests a devotional pursuit while the fly is a beauty.

Igor, I love tyeing and fishing the old traditional wets, like the one above, a purple and starling. Thanks for the nice comment.

You too ladies.

I worked with a man once, an engineer, who had all of his fly tying paraphernalia in and around or attached to his desk. When he wasn't tying flies, he was standing by my desk drinking coffee and talking about tying flies. I'm sure he 'engineered' here and there. ;) I was much more expendable. :)

Amp, I am laughing out loud right now. I used to find it easier to tie at my desk at work than at home. I had the same stuff, vices, and all...sometimes it was hard to explain.

My father was a great fisherman. Fascinated by the colours and the sparkles and the potential "craft" of fishing, I bought him a fly-tying kit for Christmas long before I came to understand that he wasn't a fly fisherman but a still fisherman who used bait and lures.

I still wanted him to tie flies.....even if they weren't integral to his sport. :)
