I'm fascinated by books that have relevance to the real world and how it works. I read animal farm; what a beautifully done analogy to real world communism. I read freakanomics and found the stories illuminating which was strange because they focused around obscure numbers that didn't look like they'd hold much usefulness at face value. (Of course the author knew better)

I'm interested in more books like that. I love to learn how people think, what motivates them, the what and why of out history (loved guns, germs, and steele also BTW), anything along those lines. I think I'll pick up Fight Club even though I've seen the movie already. Anyone have other good recommendations?

If you like Animal Farm, you should give 1984 a try. The connections between this book and the world are enough to keep you awake at night.

All good fiction has relevance to the real world. Sometimes they relate to facets of the world that don't interest you, and sometimes they seems quite remote, until you look more carefully and notice the relevance.

After you read 1984 by George Orwell, you might wanna read Anthem by Ayn Rand. You might end up thinking if the wars had effects on these writer's visions of the future.

I second that...as well as 1984. What about Candide? And I think a lot of stuff by Ayn Rand.
