View Full Version : Man, wouldn't it be cool if...?

I've been thinking lately that, though I might follow and contribute to a thread for quite a while, rarely do I subscribe or stick to it until the discussion ends (or, as has been more recently the case, is locked). It seems to me that, if a certain other LitNetter - especially a new user, I would think - were to comment on or ask about something I posted on a thread which I no longer follow, it could be rather a long time before I find this - even forever! - and can respond. I was just thinking it would be really neat if there were a feature that would inform one when one's comments get quoted and indicate the appropriate threads. Is there already a means of doing this that I am unaware of? Sometimes I do go through my posts on my profile to see which ones were likely to be responded to, but if it's something I posted a month or a year ago there would be no way of knowing short of a PM from the (brace yourself for made-up word) quoter, which they might be shy about or whatever.
Probably not possible, I suppose. Just curious.

Take a minute to think of how many notifications some people might receive. hehe that'd be funny, but I guess it would also be an option to turn on or off.

Sounds like a nice idea....if only.....sigh..;)

Maybe if you can mark certain threads for said notifications - otherwise, the really popular members like Pen and the other regulars would never have time to go through all their e-mails.

Jamesian,

Are you familiar with the option to get email notifications when someone else posts in a thread you already have posted?

User CP> Options>Default Thread Subscription Mode

You can choose how often you would like to recevie the notification; ie, immediate, daily or weekly.

...

I had not noticed that actually; many thanks. I've set it now. However, if it's a thread that I've been ignoring for a while (several pages, say, with no word from me), and someone reading through it for the first time decides to comment on something I wrote (perhaps not likely, but still...) or to pick apart my argument or something and disagree (even less likely, I know ;) :D ), there's nothing to indicate this to me. Perhaps other people are less shy about PMing, though, in this sort of situation; I sort of try not to bother folks about things like this, but I suppose that's partially why we have PMs anyway, so it's probably not a big deal...
I was reminded of this matter when I happened to encounter an old thread on Dosto's C&P that I had posted on once, and in which someone had just quoted and addressed me. I raise the question because, had there been more than one or two pages, I probably would not have looked. We mere mortal "registered users" cannot all take the time to be (another made-up word, I'm afraid) forumniscient like the mods and read everything...
Oh well. The email notification sounds like a handy thing, all the same. Much obliged. :)

There are no feature for notifications based on quoting, just the subscriptions Scheherazade already mentioned.

 When I mouse over a main page Thread / Thread Starter, I wish the little bright box that pops up to give me a sneak peak, would stay open and lit bright! I keep having to bringing the cursor to hover over and over...he he that sounded pretty funny. Any one else feel that to be an issue?
PS: I am so used to sites like Netflix where these boxes (I call them the illuminati) don't close, but stay open until re-clicked upon. Thanks Santa.
