Call Your Witness Please
Herstory
Why did I fall asleep that night,
so satisfied, letting down my guard,
letting him see me in my not so
glorious state?
I knew he was disappointed, but I
was so happy and held tight
to the moment, not daring to allow
a dream to invade my reality.
But was it real?
When I awoke his back was to me
and I knew he was pretending to be asleep.
I reached out but could not touch him.
The air between my fingertips and his body
held a tension stronger than any shield
or steel spring and my muscles burned
with the resistance.
I knew he would cringe and pull away,
and since I could not disappear, I escaped
under the covers to wait for morning.
Maybe he would forget.
Maybe not.
History
I watched her sleeping.
Had I satisfied anyone like that before?
Did I even have much to do with it?
She tried to pull more than my body into hers
but I could not let her.
I watched her sleeping.
Her eyelids moved and I knew
she was watching reruns,
so silently I turned, praying
she would not awaken.
But I could feel her eyes on my back
and my breath froze within me.
Do not touch me, my mind screamed.
Has anyone ever loved me like that before,
So willing to let me go?
Well, forget it!
I'll not take any part!
What was I supposed to do?
Please! I beg for your mercy.
I only wanted to be kind.
I was.
Wasn't I?

I love the two-character dichotomy in this, Amp. Very cool. :)

Thanks Cdn. There are always two sides to every story, even if I got to tell them both. LOL ;) ;)

This is more of that "peeping Tom through pebbled glass" I was apeaking of. You walk the edge but do not cross it into making the poem naughty. I like the play of the poem of the two characters off each other, both eventually deciding not to talk about it. Have you ever heard the country song "I Just Want To Be Mad For a While" by Terri Clark? Your poem reminds me of that song.

What would it take
for either of these two
scaredy-cats to have shown
the other a knuckle of need?
Or haven't they heard
the Polar ice-cap
is melting?

Would anyone care to cross examine Mr. Myshkin? :D
And thank you Pen! No, I've not heard that country song. And I guess if I'm going to put it all out here, it's okay to peep a little. LOL But watch it boy! ;)

Golden Gate
- from San Francisco Poems
Lupine stand as they pass,
but they are beyond
the richness of the lavender spires —
in the park they are alone
with a fine rain and their fears,
even so young the pain seems
palpable between them,
something from layers of time,
they walk with it,
as if it were a third of something
ancient like the Cycads they are passing.
He is looking for the bones, the artifacts,
that abide his sorrow,
she is remembering an embrace once
that she wore like a warm skin long after —
now, she is chilled passing by succulents in the cool rain.
Look at them in different worlds as they go
into where the path curves out of sight,
her hand reaches through the past,
touching his, her fingers wet with spring rain
her head turning toward him as they vanish.

The two attorneys looked at each other,
One with a look of fear and spite,
the other with a smile he could not hide,
Thumbs up to his team and a loud, "ALL RIGHT!!"
Ohhhhhh....I left my heart....

oh, Amp. I think you've told a story a lot of women have lived. It's beautifully told.
