Try 'Buddenbrooks' by Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann. Really bad ending. Very sad. It's about the rise and fall of a merchant family in Lübeck (Germany). I've read it several times already. My all-time favourite.

The Old Curiosity Shop has a pretty bad ending. It's by Charles Dickens.

The sequel to The Prisoner of Zenda titled Rupert of Hentzau has a sad ending. Not too thrilled with Victor Hugo The Hunchback of Notre Dame either.
