The Princess and I have in common a tolerance
for the extravagance of joy.
In our court we’ve abolished
the Golden Mean
and adopted as our national Motto
Nothing in Moderation.
*
I am Lear, doddering old,
vainglorious, self-deluded fool, and she
is young, naive Ophelia,
more than a little befuddled
by the onslought of this aged king’s
fury of desire. But,
--what’s this?--have we each
blundered into the other’s
drama?
*
Because of you
I draw more breath
into my lungs than they
were ever conditioned to hold
and there’s a trace in it
of the latest breath
you exhaled.
*
In Amsterdam, in Prague,
in the Holy city of Qum, in
my beloved, bloodied
Jerusalem, there are people
walking about, as much in love
as you or I,
and our love
blesses theirs.

Nothing can be moderate
Between us, lover
As passion is exhaled in
Our every breath

The air that passes from your lungs to mine
Tastes sweet
And I nourish myself with it
I take the food of love,
Pour it into my mouth
And let it rest on my tongue
For a while
Before swallowing with delight

My drama has become yours
And each new page you write
With your excellent Fountain pen
Reveals itself on my skin
For it leaves its imprint on it

Oh my Love, fill my heart
With your words
Write with hope
Shed the tears
That I will drink
And then,
Write again...

When you’re ready,
Lend me your pen
And close your eyes

Next time you’ll open them
They’ll find thousands of pages
For you to read
When I'm away

When you are away
you take a little more
than half my happiness with you.

When you are away
I blunder around,
the clumsiest hippo
among the gazelles.

“When I am away:”
those are not my favourite words
to hear from you.

When you are away
I see the happiness of others,
and love them for it,
knowing you’ll be back.

Star-crossed and longing
Prince and Princess
Can happiness be found in poetry
Written on a forum
When you hang out your hearts
Where all see how they beat
A rhythm that grows ever closer
To one heartbeat
Not two...

When I am away,
I take half your happiness with me
And make it grow in the soil of my soul
So that I will always bring you something more
― When I am back ―

When I am away,
I take your soul by the hand
And I am reassured
For I know it will protect me.

But ―
Can I really be away?
Can one possibly be away from a soul which constantly inhabits them?
Can one possibly want to be away from constant rapture?
