A Chance Meeting
It was an old, slightly torn, very wrinkled,
light green plaid trench coat.
Bet she thought it hid something. Subconsciously
I am sure it did.
That coat was my security blanket, especially
during periods of long coffee breaks,
sitting on those hard stools, enthralled
with her beauty.
Hey Lloyd, do you know her name? Oh, that’s nice.
Thanks buddy, I owe you.
At least now if I get the nerve to call, I will
not ask for the wrong one.
I suspect in today’s world I would have been a stalker
waiting for the right time to pounce.
I mean not in a criminal sense, but simply out of
intense infatuation.
Evening joe will give you strength, almost like a fine
single malt. Ok here goes. Wanna go to a party?
Not with you. But I would have to ask
my Mother.
There have been lots of tears and laughter,
good times and bad. Lots of memories flow under
loves bridge, but for the life of me I don’t remember
when She and I threw out that old coat.

Man, you've got a distinct voice and a beautifully light touch, a lovely feel for the colloquial.

How very sweet! I was worried that all you would write about was fishing. Thank you for the poem. Keep it up and I'm sure you will be rewarded.

Now that the cat is out I’m going to comment on this. I’ve heard mom tell the story so many times but this is the first time I’ve heard it from you and it makes you sound more human that I normally think of you. I don’t know if you know it but in my mind you are a superhero that is invincible and unstoppable. This has a since for vulnerability and I find it very touching in some special way. My dad loved my mom in a way that penetrated that superhero exterior and made him vulnerable. I think that’s pretty amazing.

Yeah. All good love poems start with taking a chance. I loved the storyteller in your poem, always wondering what role the coat would play. Magnificent!

well, I thought The Princess and the DOM was the hottest thing on the site but now I see that the Poppy-Granny-Poppy-MotherHubbard thing has just blown us out of the water!
Seriously, this is one of the loveliest tributes I've read in a long time.
