I read "The Clan of the Cave Bear" also by Auel, but I didn't read this one. Auel wrote a series of earth's children books and it should definitely be on the public domain.

Nothing is on public domain until the copyright runs out. Auel is still alive so I don't think that will happen anytime soon.
