View Full Version : What's your routine?

I'm sure some of us have some sort of routine or ritual that we follow when we sit to write. For me it is to grab a cup of green chai tea and sip while writing my story. I've also found that I must have something to munch on while I am writing. It helps me to stay seated rather than fidget and move around too much. The more I move around, the more likely I am to lose whatever thread it is that I was following. I also find that I'm specific about the time of day that I write. I've yet to write a single page before 10 p.m. so I don't even bother to try. How about all of you? Are there some specific environmental factors that must be just so in order for you to write?

I write best in the early morning, and if it follows a walk with the dog, even better. The forest is a good place to connect to aesthetics (I find).
Writing can also be very spontaneous at a coffee shop that plays jazz music quietly in the background, and there is just that ambiance that gets the Muse headed in the right direction (you know, the smell of that coffee, the music, the cozy quality of a small table, your favorite pen scratching away on a nice notebook -- earthboar can vouch for this!), etc., etc.
Good thread, Meg, anyone else?

I have a lot of notecards with character bios and plot ideas. Before I write, I like to pull all those out and spread them around the place in groups relative to the story. Seeing the cards helps me intertwine all my ideas.

I agree with Kiz Paws...When I am at cafes drinking a cappucchino and munching on some yummies, I tend to get inspired and able to write.
Whenever I am at home, I write at night because I'm gone all day. I have to have music in the background. It varies on my mood...but it is always something soft. I don't like writing on the computer...I prefer pen and then copying it on to the comp. And, I play dress up sometimes. I grab my inspiration outfit out of the closet and WHAM! I'm ready. I have water, but I never have food, maybe I should try because I get fidgety too.

I listen to inspirational music (read LInking Park and such) and just write, write, write.

i find routines similar to getting into a rut, so as soon as i find myself getting into one i break it.

No such routine for me. I just sit in front of the computer...and write. :)
