Afraid to Love
Afraid to love
means afraid to hurt.
None of us means to turn our back
on that magnificent glorious experience,
but only to protect.
We have all been hurt
so many times.
And there are many
who treat us like
.....chattels
..........(or much worse)
while wearing the mask
.....of a friend
..........(or so much more)
Opening your heart is
painful, frightening, exhausting.
Understanding who will keep it safe
is a life's work.

wow, thats touching. love can be painful. but like they say it is better to have love and lost then to have never loved at all.

A variant of that is "It's better to have loved a short person, than never to have loved a tall."

This owes a lot to its brave last lines:

Libernaut, thanks for your kind words. Appreciated. :)
PM and Pendragon, I love you guys. You always find such kind and encouraging things to say. "Afraid to Love" is definitely a long way from my best work, but I liked it just enough to throw it out for comments. I agree with both of you....the end is its strength. Maybe shoulda been just a two-line poem. LOL! :p

Thanks, Steph. :) I'm of the opinion that an open heart is a very good thing. It exposes you to the possibility of hurt, but the alternative -- closing your heart -- will almost certainly leave you alone in the end. Loving is a risk.... life is a risk. But the rewards can be oh-so-amazing.

I love this poem, Cdn!
But I think there should be nothing to fear when it comes to love, because love is so valuable. Being loved makes us feel more alive, and loving someone who loves us back is the greatest feeling ever. I understand though that it is hard to find the right person. However, it occured to me recently that sometimes there can be several right persons that can bring you different types of love, fill your heart with joy and make your life meaningful.

Thank you, Sweets. I very much agree with your comments.....and I try to love freely and deeply at every opportunity. There certainly are many people to love, many to be loved by, and many to surround us with love in the course of our lives, not just one. Sometimes there are also those who can't or won't love us back (perhaps because of the kinds of fears mentioned in this poem), but even they deserve and need to be loved. :)
