Do you always write the same? My handwriting can be completely different one minute to the next, although someone I can still always tell that it's mine (as can the people that work with me!). Occasionally people can read it, but often not. In the days when I used to make dinner, I would write down what we were going to have for dinner that evening on the chalkboard in our kitchen. One day I wrote 'hot blackened chicken', and got an immediate demand from my husband to be told what on earth 'let blockened chicken' was. It is still known as let blockened chicken to this day (and it's very nice too).

Great thread! :) Your writing is pretty, Niamh.

i wite the same all the time. only time it looks different is if i'm rushing something. If i take my time its much neater than whats above but its still got the same flow.

LiLy i like your scripts. they have a nice flow to them.

Do you always write the same?

I seem to change my handwriting completely every few months, but I think I'm going to keep this set. :D I've actually kept my cursive handwriting for overa year now. It's English Roundhand. I didn't make up any of my handwriting. :( *feels bad*

I have this thing in me, i`m always INTERESTED in seeing how people write!
My handwriting isn`t always the same. I have like 3 different "fonts" -if I can say- that I usually use..
My typical handwriting is hard to read.. But i`ll try as soon as I can to post any..

I hear ya. I mean, not on the handwriting, which I really can't see it as being "retarted" and thus making you "retarted"...

Daft! I can read that quite well. But i use to be criticised for my writing in school also. but yet some people in schools writing was so illegible. for example

How do I write...... ?

BADLY. Having never made it past the 8th grade, and working on boats for very nearly the rest of my life since then..... I don't write much of anything by hand. When I do, its printing - all caps all the time..... my cursive handwriting is absolutely illegible ..... even to me (thats IF I remember how to do it at all.....haven't tried in ages).

Hey Biblio! How are you keeping? hope everything is well. I'm sure you write well. You fancy showing us your scrawl?:D

Hi there Niamh.
Not much is well... Last week I walked in on my partner "in the act" of cheating on me with another man.... Kicked him out. Broke my heart.

My dad died a couple of weeks before that.... left me his business (same as mine) ONLY IF & WHEN I get married in the Catholic church knowing full well that will NEVER happen. So I had to sign away my claim to a few million dollars worth of boats, equipment and licenses.

Found out yesterday that I need not 1, not 2; but 3 (count 'em THREE) root canals.

(someone just shoot me and put me out of my misery)

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread too much...... (too late) .... so I'll just tell you that while I would love to show you my scrawl, the cheating b/f took the digital camera with him (even though he gave it to me as a gift on our last anniversary) so I have no way to get my chicken-scratch from paper to computer.

Cool! Somehow all the teachers survived through my school years, but I DID hear them saying more than once "Don't you think you should give me a magnifying glass with your paper?" That picture makes my handwriting a bit bigger than it really is, though.

I write on computer, not in copies these days. It is so easy. When I write on computer I can use dictionaries, and it detects spelling mistakes and the like. There are many facilities.

I often change styles. At times I like writing using bigger words, and at times simple ones.

Neat idea for a thread, Niamh. I'm fascinated by the way different people write. Just to make everyone feel great about their own penmanship, I'll post a sample of my own highly illegible script. I've also included a little sample of mirror writing for the fun of it.

I don't think so. According to what I've read on handwriting analysis, letters slanted to the left mean you're a little bit shy and withdrawn, while letters slanted to the right indicate optimism and a good leadership potential.

Yeah, as I said before I heard it on some crappy tv show, so I wasn't relying on the information. Very interesting though. So does writing straight and upright with no slant at all fit between the two?

Oh, and does anyone actually still write with typical, normal pencils anymore, the ones you have to sharpen? With the advent of the mechanical pencil it seems like I rarely see people do so. Sharpening pencils suck.

kilted exile

When I was learning to write the teacher told us that writing should incline to the right, the textbooks for practising letters were even set up so they had to incline to be "correct". We were also told a capital letter should be the full height of the line & a lower case letter 1/2 line height. I doubt the handwriting analysis experts have taken teaching into account, probably leading to serious errors.

Niamh

I haven't bothered to look through this entire thread, but one thing that floored me as a new teacher was that cursive wasn't taught anymore! All my kids knew how to do was to sign their name. I'm talking 15, 16, and 17 year olds. I had to retrain myself to print, because they couldn't read my handwriting, which really isn't that bad. I'd show you, but our scanner isn't hooked up at the moment...

I still handwrite - a lot, but then I am a university student.

I am left handed so I smudge my writing all the time. That is especially true when it comes to pencils and eraseable ink, or most pens in general. I think because of that, when I am writing slowly, my letters are usually upright and not very slanted.

Other times, like when taking notes, my letters slant to the right, to the left, and stay straight. All depends on the desk I am using to write on (stupid small right handed desks!!!). But somehow us lefties figure it out. :p I once made a friend by the fact that I noticed that she was left handed (she was all over the place with her notebook on one of those desks).

Unfortunately I do not like mechanical pencils. I think I smudge my writing more with those.

Later this evening I will post my writing. Lately, since I started university, I write cursive style...both in my notes and personal writing. But when I am taking notes in class my cursive looks horrible. So I will post an example of both the neat and the messy. Hehe but I also write kind of big, when some people have almost two pages of notes, I will have like three.

Hey there AtomicCafe. ;) According to the book, upright handwriting (writing w/o slant) shows independence. My penmanship would probably fall under that category, and the definition somehow applies to myself. I really don't depend on others much when it comes to my personal needs, though I make friends a lot. I love meeting new people (as indicated by my italicized letters which slant to the right).

*raises hand slowly* I do. Since I love pens so much (not ballpoint; ink), I don't bother to buy mechanical pencils. I prefer the sharpening kinds because I have more control (of the lead) when I'm doodling...Also, the old kinds work REALLY well with the erasers I get from Pakistan, that are extremely soft and cleans out any smudges perfectly. And they both smell really good :D

Ok guys, I guess I was wrong in my assumption. But wouldn't you think in a world where you can get an i-pod,phone,internet and all sorts of other stuff in one device, eventually the hassle of having to sharpen pencils would, well, you know? I definitely like the feel of normal ones better, but it is just so nice and convenient to have an unlimitedly(it seems like. I always lose em before I run out of lead) sharp pencil to accompany you in you various writing experiences. Now, if someone found out a way for regular pencils to be constantly sharp, I'd be all over them!

Generally, however, students find printing more legible than cursive because their eyes have been trained to look at printed letters. I don't mean to say that your handwriting is not good. I myself am a high school student too (and I have experienced teaching as well for there are programs that call for proctors and student teachers and I often sign up), and I have noticed that one of the major reasons why my classmates hated our Fil. teacher so much was because she gave us questionnaires and handouts written in script and all those loops often confused them. I'm pretty used to cursive though.
