Has anyone else been absolutely amazed ant the number of intelligent young people on this forum? Most of the young people I see are so shallow that it’s hard to listen to them. The kids here are amazing and I forget that they are kids. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone back to look at information about a young person thinking I must be wrong about my idea of their age. I’m impressed and I wonder what their writing will be like in ten years.

It must be difficult to be so different from your peers. I’m sure many of you feel isolated and unable to relate to other kids your age. I’m glad you’re not like them.

Kinda reminds me of someone I knew a while back.
There are an amazing number of youngsters here and I love it. I've learned so much from just reading what they have to say. We'll be able to say, "We knew them when".

I remember the big shock I got when I knew that Pensive was like 13 or 14 years old.
LOL, I wish I were like her :P
Youngsters in here are brilliant enough.

She was one that I was thinking of when I started this, but there are many - some of us consider 20 to be young you know :p

I'm a young'un. However, I wouldn't call myself brilliant. I do know a great deal more than my peers though. I can still remember their faces when I mentioned something about a greek hoplite at a party. Priceless...

Also---bear with me here---I somewhat surprised a few members on another forum by revealing my age, but that was a few years ago. They didn't know a 14 year old was capable of such expertise in that area (wargaming, if you must know). I was talking about how tactics used in the Battle of Gaugamela could be applied on the tabletop ;) .

this is what I'm talking about. I'm all the time asking myself where kids like this come from.

It's also rather intimidating when you're one of the younger ones on the site and you don't know what many of the people your age are talking about. Especially on the Religious Texts and Philosophical forums. I use this site as a humility tool. When I'm at school, I'd like to think I'm one of the smarter people, then I go on this site and remind myself that there are so many people here who are lightyears beyond me.

What is really intimidating is when you could be a grandparent to some of them and they are years ahead of you in knowledge! I sometimes ask myself if I would have reached their level if I had had the tools, (computers, internet) that they have had in their early years. But the truth is "NO". These kids are brilliant.

Yes!!! I don't want to single anyone out. I may wind up forgetting someone. But the young people here (let's say 25 years old and under) are outstanding. :thumbs_up Nice of you to point it out Mother-H.

The difference that strikes me the most is that most of my class-fellows know how to peel off a mango while I do not! :p (Jeez I ought to be embarrassed!)

I don't believe that is the greatest difference between you and your classmates, Pensive. If it is I would like to send my kids to your school!

25... that just about covers me (at least for 17 more days).. so that either makes me a brilliant kid (if you look at the title of this thread), or, if I take offence at being called a kid, it means I'm not brilliant? could we agree that I'm not a kid but brilliant anyway? :D *joking*

nah, seriously, some of the under 20s here are really amazing.. the numbers of books they've read, stories they've written etc.. some of us oldsters will never catch up with them... not to mention the intelligent things they say all the time.. it's really scary :p

There is so much wrong with this sentence that I can't even begin to describe it.

Also, reading/writing books! = smart

yeah, i think there's too much antagonism between "smart" and "stupid" kids.. usually it' the not so smart ones who start it, but that doesn't mean the smart ones are entitled to fight back with a vengance.
"stupid" people understand lots of things if you "stoop" down to explain them in the right sort of language

besides, i have a biologist friend who wouldn't touch a book with a barge pole (except a refernce book) but he's one of the most intelligent people I know. he just observes people around him first hand to find out what makes them tick

I may be alone in this, but I think it is wonderful and reassuring that there are so many young people who are able to think for themselves. I’m afraid that most people are only interested in what is sold to them and have to watch a commercial or read a glamour magazine to know who to be. Reading glamour magazines and writing trash about peers does not equal smart, but understanding literature that is over the heads of many adults and writing with such amazing talent and skill does.

I have come to respect them so much. I am glad that they are not like regular kids, even if that does mean they have a difficult time relating to people their age. Would anyone really trade intelligence for superficiality?

That doesn't make any sense.

I’m afraid that most people are only interested in what is sold to them and have to watch a commercial or read a glamour magazine to know who to be.

That's a gross oversimplification at best. And if people want to take their leads from a glamour magzine or a popzine or a rockstar, instead of some boring writer or wooly poet or dumb philosopher, it's their choice.

Reading glamour magazines and writing trash about peers does not equal smart, but understanding literature that is over the heads of many adults and writing with such amazing talent and skill does.

in the grand scheme of things, 'understanding' 'literature' means diddly squat. i'd rather have a supposedly simplistic good natured, nice person as a friend then some brainy hotshot who solved rubic cubes for fun at 13

I have come to respect them so much. I am glad that they are not like regular kids, even if that does mean they have a difficult time relating to people their age. Would anyone really trade intelligence for superficiality?

different automatically translates into superior now? kids who write and read stuff are special now? wow, that's patronizing and offensive beyond the extreme
