Leaving On A Jet Plane

I asked Peter, Paul and Mary to come with me tomorrow,
to walk me to my gate and sing while I wait.

No personal laptop for me, no cell phone or secret IPod,
there's just nothing like a real live hootenany.

Uptight business travelers will cease looking at their watches
as Peter and Paul strum their guitars, and little children

will be mesmerized when Mary swings her long blonde hair
back and forth while singing Puff the Magic Dragon.

First-class passengers will not even hear the call for them
to hurry aboard and settle with a drink so that they can

look at us look at them as we enter the hellish gates of
middle seats and soda pop in plastic cups.

Paul will ask for someone from the audience and, of course,
it will be me, to harmonize, "If you miss the train I'm on...."

And everyone will hoot and holler and chat while walking up
the passageway to the door of the jumbo jet, to prepare

for our departure from the city with big shoulders to the city
by the bay, wondering whom I have booked for our arrival.

Yes, tomorrow I am leaving for a visit with my family in California so I may not see you until next week. I will miss you.
And just for fun, who would you choose to greet us in San Francisco? :)

I would choose me, me of course, and we would stand around a while and wonder where we'd go to eat now that the China Moon is gone like the snows of yesteryear.

I remember how instantaneously I fell in love with Frisco, as if I'd always known and loved it.

I love to read what you write! What a lovely good bye.

I would book James Taylor. I'm in love with him - really in love. All of my kids recognized his voice at birth

I am not "Puff", though I love Peter, Paul, and Mary. Good luck from this Dragon!

What I like in this poem is that in underlines how joy ca be found in the most simple things, and also how human relationships go beyong any material thing. When I read this poem, I feel some peace, like when someone tells you that 'everything will be alright'. I don't know why. The moments described in this poem sound sweet. And I like the fact that they are leaving in the plane, and it seems like where they're going doesn't really matter, because the most important is that they are going there together.

I really like this poem (with its specificity again.)
A question: would a reader necessarily have to be familiar
with the song to "get" the poem? I think not, but knowing the song will enrich it. (And I'll be hearing it all day in my head, now! Thanks a lot! No, I kid,I kid.)
Also I wonder how the politically astute P, P, & M would feel about today's security restrictions with air travel today.
I think would change "who" to "whom" in
that line. It's in the objective case.

This is so funny. I was trying to figure out how P, P, & M was short for PrinceMyshkin since he offered to meet me at the gate which isn't allowed anymore. Geez Louise...I forgot what my own poem said. LOL
