Any thoughts on smoking or tobacco?

Anyone here a smoker? Non-smoker? Pipe-smoker? Anyone have a problem with smoking, quitting, or cutting back? Smoke because you enjoy it? Excessively or in moderation?

Cigarettes, cigars or hookah? If cigarettes, do you roll them yourself?

I smoke, hate it, have tried to stop, addicted. Nothing good about it. Don't know what hookah is or stand for. Have rolled a tobacco cigarettes for my grandpa, but no tobacco cigarettes since he died. (ok, I'll admit that I enjoy a cigarette with coffee and after some activities)

I don't smoke. I can remember as a child going to my grandma's on holidays and the house being filled with smoke because all my aunts and uncles smoked.

I hate the smell of smoke on my cloths and hair however I do like the taste of cigarettes on the guy I'm kissing - weird.

Ah, a hookah is a way that you smoke flavoured tobacco, using heated coals where you don't actually burn it (I think). I've smoked one about five times or so, I like it. It doesn't burn the way cigarettes do.

Good luck with quitting! :)

A chicken and an egg were lying in bed. The chicken was smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face and the egg was frowning and looking a bit pissed off. The egg muttered, to no-one in particular,

"Well, I guess we answered THAT question..."

Oh, that's great. I smoke a couple cigarettes a week. All of my friends smoke, and can't quit, really. Especially my best friend, who used to smoke a pack a day, but now smokes black-and-milds.

I've smoked off and on, I've never been addicted or had a problem with quitting if I wanted to, but then the most I ever smoked was 5 a day, that was a few years ago, and for less than a month. I only have one friend who smokes one or two a week, he lives in Kansas City. He actually declares it's good for you to smoke once a day, for some reason.

Oh, and I meant it's great that you cut back so much. :) Good luck.

Stick with it manolia. I quit for 5 years and got mad at hubby and smoked one just to make him mad. It was like I never quit. Except I think I smoke more and it'll be harder to quit this time. I'm going to try Chantix. One of my brothers is taking it and he says it's really working. It does something to the receptors in the brain that nicotine attaches to so if it can find anything in this little old brain it just might work. I'm setting a quit date, depending on work schedule, and I'm going for it.

Yep i have heard of that theory..smoke is supposed to kill the germs, hence some people believe that one or two cigs a day are actually good..my opinion is that is foolish ;) Smoking creates far too many problems (don't let me start on this one  )

I think the best things that ever happened to us smokers are the restrictions put on us. In Arkansas, you can't smoke in any resturant. You can in bars but I live in a dry county so that doesn't matter. Also, it's a $500 fine if you smoke in a car with a child under 18 in it. I think that's great. btw I don't smoke in front of my grandchildren, altho I know the older ones know I do they never see me.

And this is how you smoke it:
http://www.metimes.com/images/photos/full/20070608-074014-1237.jpg

well, actually not necessarily on the beach or wearing a hat :P. In Lebanon we call it Argileh, abnd Egyptians call it Sheesha. It is more dangerous than a cig. the bowl full of tobacco/flavoured tobacco is equivalent/equal to 30 cigs.

My siblings made me wonted to hookah when it`s around, but I never smoke it alone. I seldom smoke cig. sometimes a cig. in a whole month, other times 2 to 4 cigs in a week. I`m not addicted at all, I just smoke it for nothing!

papayahed, I just don`t like it on the person im kissing :P. When i`m sure i`ll kiss this person now, I ask them not to smoke in this meet-up.

that hookah does look like a bong. That's probably why Granny doesn't want to say that she hit the bong because her granddaughter and daughter read this forum (he he)

I used to smoke. I quit over a year ago. I used a combination of nicotine gum and cigaretters. Then I dropped down to gum only and now it's nothing at all. I wonder if I could lose weight if I substituted cigarettes for food?

I'm laughing so hard. We'll just stick to the don't ask don't tell plan! and I'll make sure the graddaughter doesn't read about smoking.

I smoked for sixteen years or so. I was never a heavy smoker though. Whenever I would find out I was pregnant I quit without any trouble and manage to stay that way for a while. One of my children had collic for about four years and I would smike two a day, but I needed that time away from the kids so bad. My doctor said that was just fine.

I haven't smoked in over three years and I want one all the time, but when I smell it or if a take a drag off of one I feel sick.

Hookah pipes are way worse for your health than cigs.

I used to smoke a pack a day from the tender age of 15 till 19, then I quit for about three years and started again about eight months ago. I'm down to 2 or 3 a day and I'm in the process of quitting.

Anyone have a problem with smoking...
Yes, I have. Once I was in this restaurant where many people were smoking. And I felt like I wouldn't be able to eat the food.

Smoke because you enjoy it? Excessively or in moderation?
Nope, I just can't see the enjoyment in smoking really.

Exactly! My grandfather's father (that would be my great grand-father, right?) used to have Hookah and it is said he used to use it a lot that now all his sons are against smoking, none of them smokes.

Here, there is quite a trend of sheesha in young generation (usually rich kids), I have seen one myself in a restaurant but by the look/sound of it, didn't appeal me at all!!

Mark F.
07-31-2007, 07:41 AM
Sheeshas were quite trendy in France as well but now that smoking is being forbidden in most restaurants that's going to be the end of that. A lot of friend baught sheesha pipes a while back so we used to smoke a lot of them. They're cool cause they're convivial and taste nice.

I smoked in my late teens and early twenties to keep my "girlish" figure (or so I thought). While nicotine is a fairly effective appetite suppresant the health risks of it are much MUCH too high to recommend it as such (I did a research paper on smoking a few years ago).

Not to mention that cigarettes are just nasty. Not meaning offense to smokers but I hate that stench.

I don't smoke, and I don't plan to either. I also don't like the smell of the cigarette. There's no one in my family that smokes, or has ever used a hookah, so at home it's a pretty clean environment. But, I have seen here some hookah bars, where people just lounge (sp?) around and smoke, some think it's cool, and this seems like a new trend catching up. I don't know whats cool about it, I don't feel good when I am in such a smoke filled environment.

I thought of giving up but then the UK government banned smoking in all public houses whilst allowing a caveat in the legislation which allowed for smoking to be continued in palaces. Ergo the politicians can smoke in the various bars in the Palace of Westminster, and the Queen can light up if she's gasping, but the great unwashed cannot. As such I decided to continue (it's also a pleasing misanthropy valve).

there's nothing really cool about it. I smoked once, and I am not even sure why I started doing it. But I can understand how people want to continue doing it once they have started because it is very addicitve.

Smoking is slow suicide and I don't really have a problem with that since life sucks and them you die so why not speed it up so you don't have to spend more time on this **** hole called earth, but since we have to hang out for a while (for whatever reason - I guess to learn something maybe) the time spent here would be more pleasant without the filth of cigarettes. So maybe they could create a new cancer stick that emitted a more pleasant odor. It will still kill you but it smells like roses (or maybe everglades if that's what you prefer) so that makes it more tolerable.

I'm terrible aren't I?

I picked up smoking earlier this year for a character study. I wanted to find an addiction and record the quitting process. I thought cigarettes were less dangerous than alcohol. I was going to quit in July, but I'm still with it. I coughed up some wicked coffee colored goo yesterday.

I smoke prerolled packs, but roll my own in emergencies: when I run out of the pack!

I hide it from my family, this should be on post secret, because I don't want my siblings picking it up.

I promise to quit this year.:bawling:

good luck!! that's an awful lot to go through just for a character study.

There is a drug out (i can't remember the name, but one of my family members is using it right now) and it makes cigarettes taste terrible so that you won't want to smoke. In addition, it causes you to dislike drinks that have caffeine like coffee and tea, and alchohol.
It's expensive though. If I can find the name of the drug I will post it in case anyone is interested.

But hookah is something I wish to try my hands on.... There is an Indian cigarette which is available especially in south India its called a beedi.... Any one here has ever tried that out ? bah, Nick, what did you do that for? you could have interviewed a smoker with less risk to your own health!
i smoke, but I don't really like it... I've quit a couple of times, but I always start again sooner or later.
hey, did you know that the first drag of a cigarette is enough for your brain to feel a kick? when you're addicted to smoking, you are tense and grumpy if you don't get your smoke. but actually the very first drag is enough to make you relax. theoretically, you could throw away each fag after the first drag!

I suppose you can't convince him. to stop smoking he really needs to want it himself. it's psychological. most (probably all) smokers know about the health hazards, but when you have a cigarette you don't think of the long term consequences because it doesn't kill you right away.

BUT: Every looooong once in a while, I have a cigarette. It makes no sense, but yeah, at a wedding this summer, I had a couple with some drinks. And I had a couple this past weekend, sitting on the rocks up north with my best friend and talking for hours. It didn't make me feel like buying a package, and I felt all dried up in the mouth, so I won't be doing that for a long time. Maybe never.

I started smoking when I turned 21 and discovered bars and clubs. Smoking was the only way to become acclimated to the air in there-it would turn my eyes red and make it impossible to breathe. Now I don't get out much and it's illegal to smoke in bars and clubs anyway. If I had been born a decade later I may have escaped the smoking trap and merely learned to abuse my brain and liver instead. =-)

If a person experiences cough for prolonged duration say a month or more, they should get themselves checked for tuberculosis. You should get that done, just to be on the safe side, as it's been for longer duration in your case. I don't mean to scare you though, but it won't harm to consult a doc and have an opinion.

**** KIDS, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME****

I'm an unrepentant smoker. I smoke anything and everything depending on my mood. Cigarettes, pipes, cigars...they all have their own particular uses.

I did quit (cold turkey) for two years at one time; but I was the most miserable and grouchy person on the planet for the whole time. Every minute of every day of those two years ALL I WANTED WAS A SMOKE! I ruined relationships, nobody liked me, I didn't like me; so I decided that it was o.k. if I die several years earlier.... I'd die a happy smoker.

The one restriction that I place on my smoking is that I ONLY smoke outdoors. Rain, shine, snow, sleet, hail, heatwave (one notable time even during a hurricane) outside I go. I acknowledge that it's a filthy, smelly, unhealthy, stupid habit; and I cut down from time to time but I enjoy it way too much to consider giving it up completely.

There is also literature that suggests that tobacco smoke has a mild anti-depressant effect and that many of us smokers are just self-medicating. I'm no scientist; but I do know that when life gets rough I reach for my smokes.

I acknowledge that it's a filthy, smelly, unhealthy, stupid habit; and I cut down from time to time but I enjoy it way too much to consider giving it up completely.

That is great of you, at least you don't annoy other people. I don't care if people smoke because even if I don't I'm sure I do other things that are bad for health, but smokers should always have the consideration to do it faraway from non-smokers. It's great now that it's forbidden to do it in bars and restaurants and all, it makes going out more enjoyable and I don't have to go to bed smelling horrible or take a shower at 4am or whatever....

I have tried, more than once, but it has never caught my interest. And I can't really inhale without choking so I just look stupid. :D

I guess I've never bothered to practice enough  I'll stick to my other addictions, such as chocolate. It doesn't annoy other people and doesn't make my clothes smell of it (unless I drop it on me :D )

If a person experiences cough for prolonged duration say a month or more, they should get themselves checked for tuberculosis. You should get that done, just to be on the safe side, as it's been for longer duration in your case. I don't mean to scare you though, but it won't harm to consult a doc and have an opinion.

I don't think it's that. it's the cigarette smoke combined with dust allergies and an electric fan. :p

That's good, Baki, that you have a natural way of preventing you from smoking. For most people that's the harshness and coughing cigarettes have. That's why it's never been addicting to me because 1) it costs money, and it's an action which is easy to avoid doing by either being lazy, or doing other things, and 2) it's an unpleasant thing; as well as the pleasant effects of nicotine, there's also the smoke to get in your lungs, etc...so for these reasons it's never difficult for me to go any amount of time without one. I can substitute coffee for them, or something like that, easily. (And I love coffee, like mochas...) but I don't drink it extremely regularly. Okay, enough about my drinking habits I suppose.

I smoke 2-4 cigarettes a week. I would stop if I ever had a girlfriend/boyfriend who wished me to.

Never had a problem with addiction, or any desire to smoke more.

The worst way that smoking affects you IMO is by your dental health.

Tried it a couple of times, didn't like it. Pretty stupid to damage your health like that.

Yes!

Have never tried it, never wanted to try it and hopefully would never try it. (bah I think I am being repetitive)
