HUBBARD AND SQUASH
"Have you taken leave of your senses,"
asks Hubbard (the straight man).
"No, answers Squash, dead-pan, "but
"we're taking a short holiday from each other!"
They've got one of those mature, contemporary
relationships, an 'open marriage,'
no questions asked
or answered. Hubbard has been getting into
'his' homosexuality and Squash
has both men and women lovers on the side.
Hubbard is lean
as an incipient pain, while Squash
sort of waddles around, comfortable
as pop or "B" movies.
It's a treat to see them,
following each other around,
pretending to go their own ways, each
like the punch-line to some other joke.

This is really cute. Can I say cute here? At first I thought you were writing about mother! ;) Are these by any chance people you see at your cafe?
May I jump on your thread and add my own little poem, one that I wrote in June? You made me think of it. And so, not waiting for permission.....
Pumpkin
Sometimes my mother calls me pumpkin,
and I feel so cute and round and orange,
peeking from behind green scratchy leaves and vines.
I sit there, ripening in the sun, waiting for autumn,
when someone will come along and pick me,
and hold me up and turn me over and around,
ignoring that tiny imperfection and say,
Yes, yes, this is the one I want smiling at me.

I have to admit, I thought it was me and so the poem was a bit of a disappointment. so this is just to say...
I'm sorry
Your poem was a disappointment
it wasn't about me
and I thought it would be
You were probably
making some kind of statement
writing about someone or something
that everyone would understand
Forgive me
I am shallow and vain
but it started out Hubbard
and I got so excited

Hubbard was Squashed
to find that some poem of mine
wasn’t about her, and now
I’m feeling bad!
So I thought I would write
one just about her
to see if I could make amends,
her in her cut-off jeans
and straw hat, the signature splash
of flour on her t-shirt
to the right or the left
of her you-know-whats
which it would be proper
of me to mention, given that she
is so much married, so
so so so so damned much married!

Rack and Pinion used to be into
S. & M., chains, leather, whips
and long, punishing silences,
but now they're bored
with all that stuff. They're not looking
into each other's eyes,
exactly, but they're looking,
looking: a threesome, a foursome, snuff
movies... Oh, what? They roam
the bars and beaches, looking.
Aware and yet unaware
of the eyes that are sizing them up.
The summer has many a surprise
in store for all of us.
