Well, you can have honors classes next year. And most schools allow AP classes (senior year) with an A in a CP class.

No, it won't ruin your chances at all! Don't worry. The only real advantage of being in an AP course, aside from the challenge, is that you are eligible to take an AP exam in order to place out of some college courses. Put, you have by no means ruined your chances at college simply because you are only enrolled in one AP class.

Oh goodness no! It will definitely not ruin your chances in college. I only took one AP course, and I am acheiving my educational goals in university. They just want you to make good grades.

The AP classes do help you in the sense that you might not have to take certain prerequisites or lower courses on entry to your college...they substitute the credit, like genoveva said.

Honors classes are not AP classes. AP classes, e.g., Advanced Placement, are only available in senior year. They are given if you have good CP grades (e.g., Honors are not necessary, unless it's, like, BC Calculus), and they can allow you, as grace86 said, to skip some regular college courses. That's it. Some people take many AP classes (and exams) and finish college sooner, and, therefore, cheaper. Some people take more courses overall because they skipped all the basic ones. But it has nothing to do with your college success.

I would recommend getting AP classes because they are (probably) closer to a college style program, meaning, they are harder and will get you ready so that you won't be too overwhelmed in college. And it's money conservation, of course.

AP classes are a huge help, because they will really cut down on the classes you need to take. My AP Chem class counted for 5 college credits, AP History went for 6 college credits. Basically three lasses plus the lab for chemistry was covered by two courses. Not taking AP or even honors isn't going to hurt you on college. It is much more important to do well in the classes that you take, and also work hard to score well on the SAT and ACT. My advice is to work hard at any of the classes you take, and keep your grades up. Standardized testing scores and GPA are all really important for college. I also will pass you the bit of advice I never recieved and wish someone had given to me. Be sure to volunteer your time to different causes and participate in school activities like art club or sports, or even the National Honor Society. When applying for college, along with scholarships and grants, having a good record of community service and school actovities are always a huge bonus.

mkhockenberry is totally right about things that college look for beyond academics.

and I'm going to echo her more by saying that it's always best to challenge yourself as much as possible in high school - whether it is just a lot of classes, AP clasess, or honors. Colleges want to see that you have tried your hardest with what was available at your school and what you were able to do. But you have plenty of time to work out what you want to do, so I'm sure it will be fine even if you are just in one honors class freshman year.

But it actually depends where you go to college, whether or not AP classes help you with credits. The university that I went to pretty much did not accept any AP credit, so it really can depend.
