Broken and Spilled Out

Your body, my temple,
broken in half like an egg on Sunday morning,
spilling out a heart not loved enough.
If only you could have let those things go by,
those things that clog a pure and pulsing love,
I could have given you new life.
Just as the woman who broke open the alabaster jar
that held the priceless perfume,
I had a balm to cool and soothe and heal you.
I would have poured it on your beautiful head.
Your blood would have pulsed
to the outer-most regions of your skin
and my lips would have caught each heartbeat.
But alas, you could not see and would not feel
the love I had for you.
But I care too for your eternity, so,
I bow to the angels you have chosen.
I only wonder if you will see me in Heaven,
broken and spilled out.

Oh, what heart-ache in this, especially in those last three lines!

Wee bit of trouble (for me maybe not for everybody) because of the echo in the next to last line of Eric Clapton's song about the death of his child.

Especially love this line....

and my lips would have caught each heartbeat.

Beautifully written. Painful....and beautifully written.

I love these lines:

I could have given you new life.
Just as the woman who broke open the alabaster jar
that held the priceless perfume,
I had a balm to cool and soothe and heal you.

How strange for us, what tears our hearts gives birth to some of our most beautiful expression. Thank you for this, A.
