Just curious if anyone has ever heard of the book Whitewater by Paul Horgan. I read it years ago, and it was a book that had a profound impact on my relationship to literature. It's pretty uncommon, though, so I've never encountered anyone who has read it.

The book is unrelated to the "whitewater" scandal. It was published in the early 70s, I think. It's about West Texas - where high school football is the most important (and only) thing (there are a lot of echoes of it in Varsity Blues and Friday Night Lights). It's tragic, introspective, and heavy with symbolism.

Yes, an amazing book, by an amazing writer. The images in Whitewater haunt me to this day.
