Reaching into Forever
The picture is old, faded in spots,
corners folded, fuzzy with years.
Look closely and you値l see the faces are the same.
They are my grandmother and me.
Our two faces touching, and becoming one
in a spot on the cheek in front of the ear
Both faces are younger and
older than the years they have seen.
In each face is reflected the other,
one just beginning life,
the other nearing its end
This connection lives on
transcending time,
and thirty years later
our cheeks are connected still.
The great divide, the timeless eternity, the shadow
That moves between us like a vapor
does not separate our cheeks.
I am no different than her
just an extension -
reaching from the past into forever.

"More than beautiful," wrote Ampoule - and you know what a hard but fair marker she is.
I wanted to stop and savour
This connection lives on
transcending time,
and thirty years later
our cheeks are connected still.
but reading on saw that you had carried that thought to an even more touching level
The great divide, the timeless eternity, the shadow
That moves between us like a vapor
does not separate our cheeks.
Thank you!

generations
How many miles of veins does a man have,
where do they start, and where do they end?
The blood of those before me runs through my veins,
sustaining my life as well as theirs.
For I am no more than the next part of them
carrying on with the duties that have come to fill the day,
just as they did.
Doing what must be done
without considering the value of the work.
It is necessity, and so I must. But, I keep secrets
hidden within my veins,
hoping that the next generation will bring them to fruition

Ok you've done it. This has made me cry. I carry the picture in my purse and in my heart everywhere I go. I think I'll add a copy of this poem. Thank you Sweet Baby. (You're supposed to be the one getting the B-Day present!)

See, there's a Yiddish expression that translates as Did one have to have children?

Very touching poetry. "Secrets within my veins." How true. How true. We trace our family trees sometimes to find true secrets, that our blood carries the blood of proud races. This I say always, and my dad deserted his family to raise another, if I cannot be proud of him, I honor his dad and his mother, very special people to me, and I am not ashamed of the blood I bear.
An in reality, I lost my dad to the Vietnam War, even though he came back, he did not come back the same person. Two Purple Hearts. I honors those.
Generations giving way to the next and with the same face. Lovely Poetry.

Beautiful. I was just listening to a song called "One Hundred Years" and thinking about how my parents spent nearly 68 years together. Your words tugged my heart and brought a tear to my eye.

This is one of the most beautiful poems I have read on this site. So well done and what a magnificent way to see generations. This actually made me cry because I had a grandfather as dear and close and who is responsible in so many ways for who I am.

Very nice picture. I see that you still have that wavey hair, Mother H, even as a child. I also see than, indeed, my paper doll wasn't off that far at all, was it? I've missed at times since, usually on hair color.
At 46, I am thankful to still HAVE hair. My brother (4 years younger) is nearly bald, but if I didn't prefer a short haircut, I could have it down to my waist.
Touching, those old photos. One day I have one I may share with you. My family is in the photoalbum, this is something different.
That's the perfect accent to your poem. And that poem is a rare gem. I say that, because it happens to be true.
