I think that about every book I've ever read has changed something about the way I think or live. Animal Farm, 1984, The Hobbit Series, In Cold Blood, The Grapes of Wrath...I could go on and on. I read everything and try to take something no matter how small from everything I read.

I really agree with you Granny.Every good book has something to carry and has an impact on readers but sometimes a single book you always remind in your whole life.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera) was excellent - It is written from the perspective of an omniscient narrator who makes full use of his knowledge of all of the characters' backgrounds and thoughts. In particular, there is a section of the book that contrasts what different words meant to different characters, and relates the words with events from their pasts to explain their intensely different perspectives.

After reading that book, I feel I have become more tolerant of others, and more willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. People are who they are for many reasons - this book gives such great insight into those reasons without condemning or excusing anybody.

Well, yeah, every book that I read has something in it that I pick up on too. Though there was one book that really had quite an impact on my thinking, and that book was Papillon, by Henri Charrière. For me Papillon was quite an experience that I enjoyed a lot. ;)

Many of the good books I have read have changed me in a way or another. But at the moment, those I can think of are: Harry Potter series, Wuthering Heights, Dastak Nah Do, A Bridge to Terabithia and A Wizard of Earthsea.

Harry Potter series taught me that one's feelings can be shared by anyone on this whole earth; no matter what his skin colour is or how far apart does he live from you.

Dastak Nah Do has highlighted the importance of hope in my life.

Wuthering Heights has taught me where desire can take us in life.

A Bridge to Terabithia along with some other observations taught me that a girl and a boy can just be friends.

A Wizard of Earthsea has provided me some food of thought that there are times for certain things.

---

All this might not be books which have changed my thinking completely, but they have been sources of knowledge and understanding. :)

Henry Miller in general changed my thought processes in a few areas.

What it takes in life to be happy....That material comforts don't necessarily equal happiness

He also made me realize it is good for the soul to get out and live a little sometimes

Err 'The Driven Purpose Life' by Rick Warren. It drove me out of my mind, thinking and thinking 'how is this possible?'

Vladimir Bartol's Alamut changed my point of view about Arabian world.

Alain de Botton's How Proust can change your life? changed my perspective on life and also literature.

Virginia Woolf's Orlando made me think about literature (and also time, space and genders :) ) a little bit different.

Women who Run with the Wolves introduced me to feminism, 20 questions (beginner's philosophy) introduced me to Nietzsche. Ender's Game made me question my place in the universe and the list goes on.

Every book you read, changes you a little, want you or not.

This is so true, you're so right, Granny! You really stated what I had in mind. Still, if I could pick a single book that would be "Crime and Punishment" for many, many reasons.

I can safely say that the fiction books that have influenced my thinking most are: The Brothers Karamazov, The Man Who Laughs, and possibly War and Peace.

Don Quixote mostly, and Dostoevsky influenced a lot.
