vbm, welcome back! I was getting worried. btw I think I owe you fifty bucks. I had to look up the "cat out of the bag" expression and you were correct. I was thinking along Em's lines but apparently the cat-o-nine tails was kept in a bag and when the cat was out out of the bag it was going to do some damage before it was rebagged.

wow, thank you for the welcome Sancho. i posted somewhere in here my plans to go away. i went to visit my bf and celebrate armed forces day with him and his brigade. (and yes, i had an amazing weekend! :brow: )
i am ever so pleased that my guess was right about the origin of that phrase; i wish i could remember where i heard that from. Oh, and dont worry about the fifty bucks, just keep up the valued posts, sancho, that's why we are all here.

Hello xby!

You do not have to worry. The people on this forum have been most welcoming to different nationalities. At first I was a bit nervous, because I was not sure if my english was good enough for a literature forum. But everyone has been most kind, and I seem to be able to make myself understood.

I like that there is alot of different nationalities here, because I get to learn about literature I would never even heard about before.

I hope you will have a good time!

xby, welcome to the forums!

I moved this topic of yours from where you had it in `General Literature' to `General Chat' instead as you will get more people reading it this way and the content is more appropriate to this forum.

Enjoy your stay.

Hello!
You can't understand my English? or can't understand my meaning?
I mean I am an undergraduate. I study English, French and English literature.
I'm from China, an ancient beautiful country.
Glad to meet you all!

Welcome, xby!

Don't worry, your English is very good. I've never had trouble understanding anyone here, no matter where they're from. There are at least a couple other members from China, too, but I haven't seen them around lately.

I think Isagel meant, I've never heard the name "xby" before. It's very interesting.
Is it your name in real life? Can you explain to us how we should pronounce it?

By the way, I'm Em. :D I'm from the northeast United States.

Cool, China! My grandparents are from China, but I don't speak a word of Chinese. (No, that's not true, I actually know such phrases as "xie xie" and "jao an" but that's about it.)

Hi xby, would like to join the rest of the guys and welcome you as well. Don't worry about the language, I'm sure when/IF someone can't understand, they'll ask, problem solved :).As far as nationality's concerned, I guess I haven't seen no one from around Antarctica :D, but that might be it, we're all-over-the-world kinda bunch of people . (I just had to add the banana smiley :p)

Hello! Emily
My name reads "Yang Xiao bo" in Chinese. and as you know surname is always put before name in China's convention. So, taking the initials is "XBY".
Yang is my family name, and my name "Xiaobo" means tides wave at dusk.
So romantic?

Hi ajoe!
"xie xie" means thanks in Chinese. "jao an" means Good morning. but more correctly you must read "zao an".
"zao an" is a formal phrase, we often say "Have you eaten" instead of 'zao an' in our daily life

Bonjour, welcome from the US.
I am just learning to speak and read French even though my family has been speaking french for generations, but not Parisian french, but Cajun french, since I am from Louisiana. My generation is the first to learn to speak English as the first language. That is only because our parents were punished for speaking french in schools. But now, french is making a resurgence, and the younger children are being taught french along with english. But they are learning the Parisian french, so the cajun french language is still disappearing.

Oh, thank you! :D I understand now. Xiaobo is a beautiful name.
("Emily" comes from an Old German word meaning "hard-working." :p So ugly, and so untrue!)

Cajun? What would that be? The French spoken in Louisiana? i've never heard of it and I'm curious!

Cajun is a form of french spoken in certain areas of Louisiana that were established by people who were banished from Nova Scotia (Canada). It is a combination of French, Creole, and Native Louisiana Indian tribes. So it is close to the French spoken in France but not quite. There are many words and phrases that are different.
It really is a shame that so few people still speak it.
