In ancient times, the "D" word meant what it said..........

In the name of democracy
the guns came out
slaying an enemy
defined by geography
filling purses
to overflowing
with decaying wealth

In the name of democracy
the bombs were dropped
whistling through the air
in triumphant hatred
gripping lives
fallen and frail

In the name of democracy
wings were clipped
tongues were cut
emotions stunted
feelings muted
longings re-directed
our attention vague

In the name of democracy
a crime was committed
a lie was published
a spy dispatched
a torturer gloated
a prisoner shackled
a doctor spurns Hippocrates

In the name of democracy
the truth was scattered
a word was sown
by poisonous hands
a toxin incognito
an invisible plume
impending catastrophe

In defense of democracy
an ancient idea
coveted by millions
carried by millennia
raises it’s head
and smiles out loud
the cynic shudders

In defense of democracy
the scaffolding crumbles
the builders named
the architects shamed
the trigger is soldered
the soldier retires

In defense of democracy
the books are opened
the figures exposed
the wealth unearthed
shredded accounts
pieced together
strip by strip

In defense of democracy
facts are free
locks are broken
secret partnerships
smashed by spotlights
secret meetings,
public property

In defense of democracy
a hope stands tall
and opens it’s eyes
peering from the heart
of beleaguered dreams
thinkers think fearlessly
in defense of democracy
