View Full Version : Nervousness

Written yesterday before experiencing my first on-stage performance in an annual cultural competition, while waiting in the back of the greenroom...

Butterflies hover somewhere around
The intricate web of the ribs...
A stone drops down
Out of nowhere
And runs down the pit of the intestine.
Kneecaps give way
Refusing to carry
The trembling torso--
And a fear unknown
Clasps the timid soul.

A very nicely expressed emotion symphony. I know how you feel. I used to feel that way too when I was young and had to get up in front of people. Feel assured that with age that feeling, while never completely going away, does get minimized and controled better. I especially liked the line "The trembling torso." :)

I really like this symphony. Loved the lines
"A stone drops down
Out of nowhere
And runs down the pit of the intestine"

you've definitely captured the feeling and if you rattled this off in a few minutes I'm even more impressed!

How did you feel afterwards?

Yes, symphony, you certainly DID capture the feeling of nervousness, stagefright. I have felt it many times in the public things I do (ha..and maybe even in some of the private things I do).
Virgil is right and I also think one always needs a little edginess or we become dangerous to our craft.
I like "butterflies hover somewhere around the intricate web of the ribs". I picture a birdcage...well, butterfly cage...inside.

You sold me with "intricate web of the ribs". Perfect, perhaps with the heart a spider shaking inside of it!

Alright then, i take it that it's a pretty neat piece of work. :D

And yes Bii, i cooked it up in a few minutes, since the time was for rehearsing and not writing poems!!

Lovely, you did a wonderful job. Isn't it funny how that feeling, which sounds so unpleasant, can be so addictive?

Yeah i assume it'll go away with time and more experience, and i do hope it does. Yesterday was my first time so may be it was just natural of me to be scared. I was quite taken aback when i heard my voice my own voice over the microphone...didnt know it sounds like that lol.

Hey Mom :) Thanks.
Addictive....may be yeah... But if anyone asked me to do this again right now i'll refuse, perhaps i need some more time to get used to it.
