Motherland or Fatherland?
In translation I use the phrase Motherland, but lately was told that in English it is not used widely, mainly used one is Fatherland. Right?

I've heard both, but translated from foreign languages. In the US we say "homeland." But even so, it's not a phrase that's used very often. Usually people just say "my country" or "the country I'm from."
lol, now I'm a little confused. I think 'fatherland' is either used more or only as in 'fatherland' in Czech. But it's used so scarcelly nowadays... as far as I can remember I heard it... very long time ago. Think this didn't hel, did it? lol

When I hear motherland I think of the Soviet Union ie "Mother Russia" and when I hear Fatherland I think of Germany probably because of the book with the same name.
I've also heard people talk about their "mother country".

Yeah, I usually think of "fatherland," and only in relation to Nazi Germany's "allegiance to the Fatherland." But I didn't feel like mentioning Nazi Germany. :p Don't know why.

They get mentioned enough on the History Channel (Do you think that "H" logo stands for history? I think not!)

LMAO Yes, and there's even more of it on History Channel International or whatever. My dad must be a major contributor in secret. (Maybe that's where all my college money went! "Didn't save" my ***.)

um... I really like the history chanel... I see no reason why people should be sensitive about naziism... I mean... I live in Idaho... in northern idaho there used to be a neo-nazi group... heh... it was laughable.... bunch of idiots.

I like the History Channel too... when they're talking about something other than WWII for once. :p But let's not turn this thread into a discussion of Nazism -- I'm more than confident everyone's got more or less the same opinion on that subject.
