i'm not well read enough to recommend a critic or a critical approach with regards the subjection of men, but if i were to take a stab at it myself, i'd say say sexual attraction, the way ads and commercials, not to mention film and television, exploit sexual attraction to subject men to a vice they find irresistable.

in the world of books, the way charles bovary ruins himself comes to mind. he's so infatuated with emma rouault's surface charms and attractions that he weds her, unaware of her wickedness and depravity within. oh well, it's only a book, thank goodness.
