I read a book in my high school Brit Lit class, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it was and it's haunted me for eight years.

The reason I can't find it is because I can only remember one specific scene from the book...it involves a girl who goes to a mascarade party and I believe she dresses as a man...either that or she's just disguised and no one knows who she is. I think that a guy is watching her and when he sees her take off her mask he falls in love with her? If I remember correctly, she was a visitor but I have no idea why she was where she was.

It also had a movie adaptation. It was probably late 1980's-early 90's?(The book was much older...not in the 20th cent) There was one scene where the girl was wearing a long white flowing dress and was in a field or moors of some sort. She had long dark hair with fair skin. I know it's not Wuthering Heights, obviously...and it's not Much Ado About Nothing.

Please please please help me if you can. It's been driving me batty for years. :flare:

Thanks muchly.

I'm not sure I'm not sure but it could be As You Like It.

Look at this site to see if it matches your memory.

It souds like Steppenwolf But that would be German literature. Do you by chance recall a heavy jazz theme?

I think it may be Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. The plot involves twins, a boy and a girl, and at some point the girl dresses like her brother. There have been plenty of movie adaptations over the years. I realy think it may be what you are looking for.

Well...it wasn't Steppenwolf, that was too recent.

I also know that it wasn't Shakespeare, it was in novel form...though I will say that you guys are on target....that's the answer that I've been getting everywhere. :)

It was suggested that maybe it was Tess of the d'Urbervilles, which makes some sense because the movie (1998) seems familiar, but I don't recall any masq. ball scene...only the may dance and I could have sworn it was at night. I fear I may be confusing every book we read in my class that year.

Thanks for the help, though!
