I just realised how much I miss the sound of table tennis being played on a table-tenis table!

Others sounds that I like are the following:

*When the rain patters
*Musical instruments (if the person who is using them is doing a good job otherwise that sound can be a real mess!)
*The talks of children when they are going through the phase of learning new words
*Some people's voice is too good!
*I also like the sound of how some people laugh at times.
*The sound of tap-dancing (sometimes)

That's it. I hope I haven't forgotten anything to be mentioned! How about you people? What are your favourites? :)

- the sound the cat makes when she sees birds outside the window. She crouches down like she's going to go catch them and she makes these funny little quiet meows.

- the sound of the bell ringing

- the sound of the traffic horn on the morning news before they announce the traffic situation

- The sounds of water (rain, waves)
- Musical instruments (well-played, of course :D), especially violin, harp, organ and flute
- Little children's laughter
- The sound of "sadeputki" (literal translation would be a "rain tube"). I have no idea what it is in English... It is a kind of a musical instrument, but you can't play melodies with it. It's originally South American and it's made of dried cactus. Well, it just sounds great

I also love this sound! :) But I think it must be hard to listen to it all the time? Living very near to the coast means you have to bear some noise, though I am a beach-lover, but I don't think I would be able to live there for much time! Basically I like quiet, not even the over-excessiveness of my favourite sounds. :p

I wish I could fancy the pitter patter of raindrops too, but the sound hits me like a bomb on the head!:(

The only sound I adore is of cash register doing its job.:D(still noisy)

That soft silent blanket of hush that snow brings

The shushing sound of surf breaking on the shore

Birds at day break announcing the dawn

Birds at twilight as the sun goes down

I like the sound of my husband dressing in uniform
My children playing or talking when they think I’m not listening
Frogs, crickets, whippoorwills, chickens
ducks getting in the pond,
Strong wind in the trees,
rain of all kinds especially on a tin roof
And the sound of sleeping babies breathing

Silence

That's a good one! I also find myself seeking it a lot of time. Can't think properly without it! :)

I have a deaf niece so I know SEE sign and am learning ASL. So when I read this thread my mind went to the idea of noisy silence and then I remembered this poet Joanne Weber. She is a deaf woman who writes about being deaf. She has a poem called "Noise." One of my favorite lines in any poem comes from this work. The line is

“Your hands are noisy when our child is conceived.”

I wonder about this a good deal. What is noise to my niece? Rapid, erratic hand movements? Is noise not really sound but just that which changes our emotional state.

Many of you have mentioned water...I like that too but sometimes I wonder how much of it is the sound and how much is the movement and if I went deaf would I still be soothed in the same way?

And oh I just found out I quite like the sound which is made by me typing through keyboard. It seems to me as if I am playing guitar. I hope it's not too weird!

No, 'tis not! I feel very eloquent when I start typing very fast. Makes me feel smarter. We can dream, at least. :p

This is a fascinating question. I'm more interested in knowing why people like a certain sound than what that actuall sound is. The story behind the sound as it were.

My current favourite sound is not appropriate for this forum, sorry. :p

The sound that comes from somewhere... I know Aims... you're not that opaque to me...hehe.

When we say sounds, can I include songs? Do you categorize them as tunes? Ah, they're the same. Current favorite is She by Elvis Costello and One In A Million by Larry Graham. Songs sang by "my groom" in the bridal fashion show I did. Very sentimental...
