I can't help you with passages in the book, but if you want to do a more interesting paper, you might research the man that that actually happened to. He was a cuban fisherman, and he told his story to Hemingway, who wrote it and claimed authorship.

"Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

"He always thought of the sea as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her."

'....What are we eating?'
'Black beans and rice, fried bananas, and some stew.'

Actually, that DiMaggio quote is good, but it's the following part which makes it excellent:
'Be careful or you will fear even the Reds of Cincinnati and the White Sox of Chicago.'
That quote is one of my favorites because it tells me not to fear, because fear builds itself!

Hope this helps! ;)

Regarding "the Old Man and the Sea", a little commented on part of the novel are the stories told by the fisherman to his young companion which is much about baseball, fishing and other aspects of the old man's life. These vignette like digressions give in the most minimalistic way a perspective on both the story and the dreams of an ancient mariner and generously add to the boy's admiration of a man who has much wider mental horizons of an allegedly specialized tradesman and inform this young person of a world much bigger and inclusive of a fading great spirit who wants to teach the boy of the world encompassing far more than the island and his life at sea. quasimodo1
