Here, I've never written a poem of my own accord before, but the first line jumped out at me ten minutes ago and I wrote this. Please critique thoroughly; I'm rather new at this sort of thing. My goal is to write the same quality as jon1jt but I'm going to have to work on that, obviously. I'm not even sure if this qualifies as poetry; I don't know what it falls under.
Shades of half-grown stories flitting through my mind
I am left breathless by the quick succession of ideas
What does it mean to be a writer?
To find fact in fiction and fiction in fact?
To travel the journey from beginning to end?
In earnest of more tales to come?
Writing a character isn't easy.
Why do people write?
It clutches your mind until you're finished,
But it's liberating, isn't it? To rise above reality and
Escape from its unrelenting grasp?

Andava-ya...I sooo love that!!! I can't tell you the right way to write, or am I able to critique your work...others here are more qualified....all I can say is this poem touched me personally....fresh, raw from the heart, and 'organic'! The fact that you are new to this and are able to relate your emotions through writing.... I think is wonderful...you had no problem relating that strange and powerful compulsion to let the ink fly from your pen...or...sound resonate from your keyboard...Good Poem!

aww, shucks! thanks andave for the compliment! i recommend reading some of the terrific poems posted on litnet and expose yourself to as many different styles as you can. eventually your own style will surface. what you wrote here definitely qualifies as poetry, and the first two lines are gorgeous. and you plunge into a very interesting subject matter---what does it mean to be a writer? hmm. good darn question! i think you answer it perfectly as well:
"it clutches your mind...it's liberating...to rise above reality" ;)

You asked in your poem, "Why do people write?" After reading your poem, I think I know... http://www.cosgan.de/images/kao/froehlich/a055.gif

I can't tell you how much your comments have encouraged me! I have been reading poems on this site and am really learning a lot through them. Were it not for the LitNet I probably wouldn't have written the poem. ;)

Your poem really spoke to me as a writer andave, thanks for that :) It made me feel a little less lost.

Very good, andave yaa!
These last two lines are my favourite. :)
But it's liberating, isn't it? To rise above reality and
Escape from its unrelenting grasp?

I am not a critic so I will keep my opinion to myself. That being said, I love first attempts. They are so innocent and pure and void of all influences and rules.

andave_ya You have such a great start with these lines. "I am left breathless by the quick succession of ideas" You know enough already not to let you quick succession of your ideas be your poem. Some poems will pour out of you as if you were born to put it on paper, but your sould wrote it three centuries ago and has just been waiting for the right moment.
You follow this line with a perfect succession of questions and the best is, "To travel the journey from beginning to end?"
Good job and great thinking!
