The thorn pricks my finger
The red tear drop trickles
From my skin onto my dress
But the sweet fragrance
And the buttery velvet petals
Were worth the insignificant tragedy

And the bite of the thorn
With its mark on my summer dress
Is an intimate reminder
Of that moment
And the infinite lesson
Of pain and pleasure

The rose with its widened petals
Cradled in the palm of my hand
Draws my mouth to the scent
As I draw the velvet across my lips
I realize that the very thorn that bit
Is as beautiful as the flower

And the bite of the thorn
With its mark on my finger tip
Is an intimate reminder
That beauty and pain
Can be one and the same
Inseparable enemies

And the realization
That the sweetness of beauty
The rose;
The touch of a lover:
A child's smile;
The soft curve of my lower lip;
Is what makes the insignificant tragedy….
